Calif. GOP wants own candidate to withdraw
Demand linked to letter meant to intimidate Hispanic immigrant voters

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. - Orange County Republican leaders on Thursday called for the withdrawal of a GOP congressional candidate they believe sent a letter threatening Hispanic immigrant voters with arrest.

Tan D. Nguyen denied knowing anything about the letter in an interview Thursday with The Associated Press but said he fired a campaign staffer who may have been responsible for it.

Good to see the CA GOP keeping a sharp eye on their candidates. Makes me have more faith in their party.....too bad Sanchez is the Dem opponent, though...

It might be useful to point out that the "Hispnic immigrant voters" that were supposedly threated were those voting illegally. Imagine threatening those breaking the law with arrest!!

No, you actually don't.

However, what you can't do is to use the quote function like you did in the thread starter. If you do (as you also did in the "shoddy knife vs. lethal injection" thread), then when you click on the link, A.net thinks you're looking for the member info for user "http://www.msnbc.com/.....".

As far as I can tell from the couple of articles I read, it was sent to all OC Democrats, which I'm guessing most naturalized hispanics are registered as. Sounds more like initimidation than helpful legal advice.

I believe the flier actually stated that those voting illegally could be prosecuted. I don't see how that intimidates anyone but those that might be planning to vote illegally...

From the letter:
You are advised that if your residence in thisrncountry is illegal or you are an immigrant, voting in a federalrnelection is a crime that could result in jail time."

Does anyone know how illegal immigrants voters there are in California that have been prosecuted. I would bet barely any. I believe in the last general election in my county in Arizona they investigated six individuals, and found that they were eligible to vote.

As far as I (a California resident) know, none. Hopefully, that will change, but since voter registration laws here are extremely loose, I don't hold out a lot of hope for any quick changes.

See below - I'd say that at the very least, that line does a good job of suggesting even naturalized immigrants face arrest. But I could simply be misinterpreting the good deed being done by the Republican campaign staff for all the Democratic voters in OC.  Wink

I agree the letter (if accurately quoted) is poorly worded. I;m sure it meant immigrants that were not (yet) citizens.

Part of the problem probably came from the fact that the writer was probably a native Vietnamese speaker. We have some wonderfully wacky language issues around here!

I cannot imagine any immigrant who had become a citizen thinking he/she could be arrested for voting...
