Sup Deutschlanders... and DLKAPA, who will be an ass and show up. Looks like I'm gonna stay on at Freie Uni for another year here in Berlin. A few of the student aids have suggested I look at WGs as an excellt alternative to home stays or living alone in an apartment. I like the concept of WGs, as it will allow me to practice German and chill with people in their 20s, but, as I'm new the process, I have no idea to expect. They suggested sites like http://wg-company.de/, which has suited me well.
Long story short, any tips you all can offer me when looking at WGs?
... are a few other ones I can think of.
Basically the best tip is to look at a lot of WGs to see which one is best for you and has the nicest WG-mates.
I guess the hippest areas in Berlin are Prenzlauer Berg and Friedrichshain, as far as I know. However that also means that competition is very harsh there.

Correct, not only the hippest but at the same time very relaxed, especially Prenzlauer Berg.
But FU, in contrast to Humbold Uni, is a bit far away from both districts.
I guess you should pick a district in the southwest of Berlin rather than in the northeast. If you are adventurous enough to live in a somewhat wealthy part, try Dahlem.
Please note that neither Prenzlauer Berg nor Dahlem are districts any longer. Prenzl'berg is now part of Pankow, whereas Dahlem is part of Steglitz-Zehlendorf.

Dahlem and Steglitz are boring and far away from stuff, and don't get me started on Lichterfelde. I'll take anything that can get me on the S1 quickly.
Avoid "Kiffer-WGs", you'll get high just from "Passiv-Kiffen". I once stayed over at a friend's WG for a night, and even when they weren't smoking the whole room smelled like one bit pot farm. Though I'm sure Patrick aka Sabena332 would love that .

too true. I lived in Pankow some years back when i did my year at the Humboldt so only had to walk down the road to ge there. PB would certainly be great to live in - if a tad far from FU as already mentioned.
Envious envious envious here. Think I need another Berlin fix soon
