The adage that there are plenty more fish in the sea may not be true much longer.

The world's fish and seafood could disappear by 2048 as overfishing and pollution destroy ocean ecosystems at an accelerating pace, US and Canadian researchers reported Thursday.

If current global trends continue, the loss of fish and seafood will threaten humans' food supplies and the environment, according to the most exhaustive study to date on the subject, published in the November 3 issue of the US journal Science.

Ahhh! I can't live without sushi!!!

Seriously though, these global problems are arising every day. The ocean is just one problem in a million. We just have to watch out, even though changes are gradual some problems may arise sooner than we think!

If I'm 'lucky' I'll be 80 and not in the mood to eat crappy nursing home "fish" so that's just as well.

I love seafood, but what concerns me is the local communities that rely on fishing. Here in western Alaska, my town is known as the Salmon Capital of the World. It is our only real industry in the area, thankfully Salmon are considered a re-newable resource with proper management. But the food salmon eat will effect salmon, it is the chain of life. Fish have always been a mainstay in human diets, I can only hope that with better management and protection of the resource will we be eating seafood until only cockroaches roam the Earth.
