"THE SPECTRE of a nuclear race in the Middle East was raised yesterday when six Arab states announced that they were embarking on programmes to master atomic technology.

The move, which follows the failure by the West to curb Iran’s controversial nuclear programme, could see a rapid spread of nuclear reactors in one of the world’s most unstable regions, stretching from the Gulf to the Levant and into North Africa."

Doesn't bother me a bit. I mean, what's the big deal about nuclear energy aside fom the fact that the waste products are mutagenic and teratogenic and persist in the environment forever? I mean, take a look at Chernobyl-hundreds of square miles uninhabitable forever...so what?

Come to think of it, I think every nutjob in the middle east ought to have as big a nuclear reactor as he can afford-preferrably the cheap, dangerous North Korean imports. I'd encourage the North Koreans to export their good good technology at bargain prices, so as to get some dough coming in.

Let THEM deal with nukewaste in their own lands. After they've fucked everything up forever, they can stew in their own juices and blame this, too on the Jews.

Well in theory these countries are supposed to be friendly...I have no idea what Algeria is all about but I wonder why they suddenly want to go nuclear.

In a related note has anyone seen the CBC documentary "Nuclear Jihad"? It was pretty good. Their rationale for going nuclear is because all the other major religions in this world have nukes, except the Muslims...so they want an "Islamic Bomb" which was graciously provided by Pakistan and Mr A.Q. Khan.

Iran not being an Arab country comes to mind. Remember who supported Iraq during their war with Iran.

I wasnt aware that religions had nukes , I thought it was countries that had nukes . Incidentally , since apparently all major religions have nukes can you tell me who is holding it on behalf of Buddhists?

Considering that's one of the worlds great unanswered questions, I think it's unfair to ask AndesSMF it!  Wink

So Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, UAE and Saudi Arabia want to develop nuclear technlogy per their right under international law? Well whilst I am a bit hesitant, thanks to my ignorance, about one or two of the countries, do you really have an issue with places such as the UAE? I can't see why!

I have no idea who is holding it for the Buddhists..maybe some North Koreans (are they Buddhist?)...and in any case I was quoting what they said in that program. See http://www.cbc.ca/nuclearjihad/ for more info.

Not a bit. Do you remember when you were a kid and you just HAD to try something stupid because you saw the adults in the crowd doing it-rolling up a pack of Luckies in the tee shirt sleeve comes to mind, bottle of Jack swiped from the package store when the clerk wasn't looking, or climbing in the back seat of a 59 Rambler with some sweet young thing...

And when you got home and told your Dad about the trouble you were in he looked up from his newspaper over his glasses at you and said "You bought it-now fix it." and went back to his paper?

That's my opinion. If they want to run with the big dawgs, better be ready to deal with the mess, and stay the hell on the porch if they're not.

Understood! And I guess this is the occassion when some would complain for the US interfering and complain for the US NOT interfering as well. And then of course, the US would be expected to clean up the mess.
