Could This Be Anything But Foul Play?

When I was in high school a friend and I were walking through some brush and came across a police officer's ticket book/box and some shotgun shells in a plastic box. The previous tickets' carbon copies were recent, maybe a day or two old IIRC. At the time I thought it was strange but I didn't think it was serious. As an adult, however, I can't figure out how a ticket book would have found its way into some brush unless something very unusual happened. I was watching the local news to see if any officers had been recently harmed or gone missing, but nothing like that ever came on the news during that time. As a result I didn't feel any great need to report it at the time, even though I would almost certainly report it today.

So, would you assume that this was related to foul play or do officers ever go 'AWOL' when they quit and just leave their stuff lying around for anybody to come across? I mean, even though it seems rather unlikely, officers are just humans like anybody else and I've seen some coworkers of mine do some really stupid things in the process of quitting or getting fired.

If it was truly foul play it would have gotten someone's attention.

Who knows, considering the location, maybe the officer in question was having an impromptu and through investigation of a female subject (speeder or other traffice violator) when he was called out for something that demanded his immediate attention like a serious accident or the like.

It was found in a large lot full of brush in between two apartment complexes but too far into the brush to just be an accidental drop in my mind. I thought maybe it was dropped during a sting operation, but why would an officer be running around with his ticket box in such a situation? Also, without those carbon copies how would the previous tickets ever make it into the system? A cop who was careless enough to lose several days worth of tickets by leaving the whole ticket box in some brush somewhere would certainly have been canned right? It just doesn't add up in my head and for some reason I'm still curious for suggestions on how this thing ended up in some brush between two apartment complexes.

I imagine it was probably stolen from the officer. If any harm had come to the officer it would have been publicized in one way or another. Being that you found it (I assume) in good condition, it was probably just stolen with no real intent. I assume that it would have been destroyed had it been stolen with some intent - say that someone on one of those tickets had stolen it - at least I would have. No fingerprints to trace it back to.

Man, with all the cops on here I was expecting more suggestions for what happened. This wasn't meant to be a dig at y'all so I hope that's not how you took it. I guess next time I'll try to word it a little differently.

My guess is the stuff was stolen from his cruiser. I know my department would like the stuff returned no matter what the circumstances if found.

COuld be foul play, anything is possible . . . but I would surmise the cop was probably in the brush looking for something . . . a person, some evidence, even in thick brush . . . we get in there and look . . . maybe snagged the ticket book on a thicket or some such and it fell off . . . wouldn't be the first time.

As for the shotgun shells? I have no idea. Are you sure the two are related? Could be a weapon the cop was looking for - a shotgun and some shells. Lost the ticket book looking for - and perhaps finding - the shotgun. Didn't see the ticket book fall and didn't catch the box of shells. Especially if it was dark outside . . .

A few other scenarios possible . . . .
