I'd advise against listening to people who either may not listen to whatever type of music you're talking about or are just into the popular stuff. I think I know club music, but for all I know it is a mix of trance, dance, club, rave, techno, etc -- I do not know the difference, per se.

Trance isn't dead, I just think perhaps it is past it's peak, so much of it sounds formulaic and cliched and it gets old. I've been listening to 'trance' for about 10yrs now but have been listening to some stuff created previous to that too. I think trance was at it's best in 1998/1999 and sure there have been some good, heck some really good tracks since then but I listen to 'amazing' live mixes today and just find them a bit dull. I'd much rather listen to one of the mixes from Paul Oakenfold's Essential Mix World Tour than some of the more recent stuff.

Sean Tyas is supposed to be one of the big names to look out for yet I find his stuff a bit rough and lacking melody. Some of the big names of trance yesteryear have moved on to other scenes; Sasha, Digweed, Paul Oakenfold have all moved on to other scenes some of which is great! Tiesto has become a complete sellout (How many times do we need to hear Traffic?) and Paul van Dyk is whoring out too much of his and Vandit's back catalogue from three years ago, although in his defence he can still whip together a decent mix. Ferry Corsten, Armin van Buuren and the like I just find quite dull with most of their mixes and production being plain...

These days I'm listening to stuff with a more progressive feel. Four of five years ago I might have said my favourite producers were Lange, Tilt, Quivver & Matt Darey now I'd be more likely to say Benz & MD, Snake Sedrick and Yvel & Tristan.

To be quite honest though I'm not sure whether it is me or the music that has moved on...

Four of my favourites...

Trance isnt dead its just that it gets little airtime on the radio anymore and so people are forgetting about trance. There haven't been any bangin' tracks out (like there used to be in the mid-90's). The recent stuff has been electro house (The Egg and Fedde Le Grand) *Shudders*. Its such a shame, but because trance hardly gets a radio play promoters wont push a trance night outside their comfort zone in case no one turns up to it.

I'm a massive trance fan, you'll always find me In Brighton or London @ Turnmills, Godskitchen, Honey Club, The Zap. I'm heading up to Gatecrasher tomorrow afternoon for The Explosion. CANT WAIT!!

What night is happening on the 24th? I'm thinking about going to the fridge for "The Gathering".

Enjoy!

Sad to hear that...Tiesto is by far my favorite (big fan of his in search of sunrise mixes and a good number of his own stuff like 'suburban train'). Then again, I live in Tennessee most of the yr where Im probably the only person in the state that listens to such music, so i might be a little behind...

Certainly not! Ferry has released his new album L.E.F and the track titled L.E.F is a Tune! The other stuff is excellent as well, but is a bit more chilled out than LEF.

Armin van Buuren is still a world class DJ. I've got a few of his Mixes and they're pretty good! I like his remix work of Motorcycle - As The Rush Comes!

No, tiesto DOES sell out... every venue he DJ's at... I'm trying to get a ticket @ Air in birmingham this december but its currently £60 a ticket on eBay!

I can't believe you want to hear Traffic for the 4764th time

Tiesto was really good and his Live set from Energy in 2000 is one of my favourite sets, as are some of the Magik CDs but IMO his productions of late are poor. There is no doubt the guy can remix, his reworks of stuff such as Yahel - Voyage, Balearic Bill - Destination Sunshine, BT - Dreaming, Solange - Messages in the late 1990s are amazing but Lethal Industry, Parade of the Athletes and his butchering of Adagio for Strings were really poor. I just think the guy has someone doing great PR work for him.   He managed to play at the opening ceremony of the Olympics in 2004 and has his own line of Reebok shoes and has become the poster child for modern dance music. Frankly though I don't think he lives up to the hype, there are many good DJs out there who would I'd go and see 100 times over before seeing Tiesto.

He's gone down the electro route too much and I find it boring. I think the only decent track off L.E.F. is 'Posession' (sic). Some of his stuff before he went down the electro route was really great. His work under the System F, Pulp Victim, Moonman, Veracocha & Gouryella aliases were excellent

He still does come out with some gems, his Universal Religion mix of 'Dido' is incredible and one of the best openers ever IMO.

To be quite honest I really loathed Motorcycle - ATRC with every ounce of my being    I really am an exception there, it wasn't the fact it was overplayed I just hated it!

Hey guys - if any of you want to come and see me do my thing alongside Tim Samsara and K90 at The Fridge in Brixton this friday email me for guestlist spaces.

The 24th is the opening night of my own night - 2Cliche'.

We are rocking the Rhythm Factory in Shoreditch - yours truly in doing the business 12-2 in the main room, and then the UK's number 1 female trance DJ Sophie Sugar takes to the decks. Billy Gonzalez and Dan Galbally are headlining the house room - email me for guestlist spots - Speedbirdie is probably already coming, would be lovely to see some more of you come along and see for yourself that TRANCE IS NOT DEAD!

My fave trance tune since Inertia - The Chamber.

Absolute, complete, utter, total pant-wettingly lovely tunage. This is an absolute anthem the likes of which we have not seen for some years. Awesome.

Where have you been seeing PVD then? Cos everytime ive seen him in the last year or so hes played tough techno, with the tiniest trance edge. Not heard him play a Vandit tune for a very long time. That includes the Nu NRG stuff.

Qantas - I agree with you mate. Jeff Mills has been, is, and probably always will be one of my all time favourite DJs. Techno for purists. I also rate Dave Clarke, Richie Hawtin, and Stacey Pullen - unfortunately, techno doesnt have the pulling power that trance has here, and I dont really mix it much - I tend to reside in the House and Trance realms, with heavy techno influences in both genres.

I have to say though - judging trance by what you hear of Tiesto etc is a mistake.
