Playstation 3 - Who's Lining Up?

Yesterday I went to Fry's Electronics (big electronics warehouse in the US, for those of you who don't know), and there were 5 or 6 tents lined up outside the front. I asked one of them what they were lining up for, and he said for the PS3. It arrives tomorrow, and he's been at the front of the line since Monday. He's a nutter.

So, my question to you all is: what's the big freaking deal? It's a games console that will put you back $600. In 5 or 6 weeks, the big deal will be over, and anyone will be able to stroll in to Fry's or Best Buy or wherever, and get one. What is it about the "must be first to get it" mentality that forces people to deprive themselves of basic functions like a working bathroom and a shower for a week, just so they can get their hands on a a new toy?

Twofold:

1.) First of all, it won't just be "a few weeks". Sony has so underproduced that it will be MONTHS and MONTHS before they will be available at all.

2.) Profiteering. People will buy 5 or 6 of these at $500 and sell them on eBay for $2000 or $3000. Parents will do anything to give their little brats what they demand for the holidays.

That's what they said about PS2. That's what they said about Xbox360. Neither were true. I walked in to Best Buy three days after Christmas last year and purchased a 360 for regular price. I'm skeptical about Sony's underproduction claims - it's psychological marketing. In any case, it won't be "MONTHS and MONTHS".

Geez, people put too much value on these things, especially as Fry's have a strict one-per-person policy.

I was at Best Buy monday out of boredom and noticed they had a PS3 set up for demo already. There was absolutly no one there looking at it so I stood there and played it for about an hour. What an awesome system!! A guy that worked there came over and started talking to me and I asked why no body was here playing it and he said that people dont know they have it set up yet. I asked also if they have people lining up yet and he said yes....but they are throwing them out and only letting them there for up to 24 hours. I drove by the store today on my way home from the airport and there are about 10 tents lined up out front. Its cold and rainy here too, so that has to suck! Target store next door has about 3 tents out front. I thought it was an awesome system and would love to have one...but I will wait till they are in supply again till I get mine. Hmmm or I can dish out about $2000 on ebay to get one.......ok ill just wait....

All that trouble and hassle for a gaming divice. That's just crazy. I would buy anything if I had to wait for more than ten minutes max.

some people have addictions I guess??

Here in Atlanta, they had like 5-10 minutes on the evening news interviewing people about the PS3, why they were lined up, etc. Most stores have a one-per-person rule, except for one or two.

Currently, a guy I know is camped out in front of a store that does not limit the ammount you buy... he is first in line, and is planning on buy 4-5 of them, then re-sell on ebay for a 5,000 or 6,000 dollar profit.

Not bad if you ask me.

But still, why would people spend so much for a game system that they will be bored of in a year?

Same here. (Un)fortunately for me, Jr. only wants Legos and trains for Xmas. So his holiday train and BNSF engine are already waiting for him. Crap! Now I have to spend Xmas building Lego! (Very sarcastic)

BTW, Legoguy, it was mentioned some time ago that I have more Legos than you! I ran out of space to put them in.

Wrong, at least for the PS2 part. From what I was told from the higher ups as well as from Sony personel themself, Sony only had 550,000 units TOTAL throughout the states. Therefore, buying a PS2 for the next 2-3 months was next to impossible. The Xbox didn't have this problem since it doesn't have the fanbase that the Playstation has, although it is starting to get up there.

Advice: DO NOT BUY these first generation production models. The PS3 is still plagued with problems as were the first PS2s. I'll wait for a year before I buy mine, thanks. Plus it will be cheaper by then too.

EDIT: By the way, looks like they are doing it again:

All mine. But for this reason only:

I was forced to give up my collection at 14. Regretted that decision since then. Figured I would keep the collection when he feels he's too old for them. Will be waiting for grandkids or maybe we'll have enough to do some really cool stuff.

Restarted collection at 19. Kept it going. Jr. has destroyed a good chunk of it, but at 4, has started to finally bug me to fix all the models. There is no more space at home to actually place all the models I have.

Last year, he started on his trains, and after Xmas we will have this for the train side, all 9V.

1. High speed train
2. Santa Fe engine + 2 cars
3. BNSF
4. Holiday Train
5. Cargo train
6. Cargo crane
7. Train station
8. Intermodal set
9. Enough track to fill up his room

For Xmas, I will ask for additional Lego sorting boxes, the three I have are not close to enough. And these would be for the Legos that dont belong in my models.

If you only lived close enough, I would ask you to help me rebuild.

I literally just got back after having heard my brother is one of those people in a tent, waiting for tomorrow.

He's a serious gamer but he too knows the first few will be on bug-laden, so he's going to buy and then throw it on ebay to turn a profit.

Apparently though, some guy came up to him and offered $500 for his spot in line!! My brother declined. He's waiting for the $2000 offer.

Pretty interesting value structure we have here.

I have no interest in the console whatsoever. I just wanted the money.

Apparently he does. I just went back there to pick up some satellite speaker stands, and he was still there at the front of the line, offering me a hot dog (he had his BBQ going). The line now stretches around the back of the building, I estimate probably 150 or so tents and twice as many people. They had signs up advertising the package, and after the first 200 in the door, the others will be on a lottery basis - people given a ticket as they come in through the door, they present the ticket at the counter, and if their number matches one of the tickets on the PS3, they get it. If not, they must go to the back of the line.

It's totally ridiculous.

There are 9 Fry's stores in the area, and this one is the only selling the PS3. The other stores are referring all customers to this one, probably because it is a larger store with the capability to handle ultra-long lines and maintain business for those shopping for something other than a PS3. Perhaps that's why that have that many in stock.

I planned on lining up tonight around 10 and then selling it on eBay tomorrow morning, however, my friend that works at BestBuy said that people were there early Wednesday with tents, so, I sure wasn't doing that, so I guess I'm not.

I did it with the XBOX 360 and made a great profit, but I can't take time off of school to line up, so it's out for me this year. Too bad though, I loved getting suckers on eBay to pay up for the 360!

I keep wondering if I should change my flag. I was born and raised in Ecuador, still have plenty family there, but now live in SMF. 2 hrs from SFO and about 7 hrs from LAX. Plus other wonderful California spots.

But if you want to go to Ecuador, I might get my sister to give you a tour of the beach areas.
