G'day all

Last night here in Aussie they had on a celebrity Who Wants to be a Millionaire? One of the people on it was the guy who won the million bucks on Survivor in America.

This guy has broken the record to be the first person on the Australian edition of the show to walk away with absolutely zip, zilch, dadda. Something to be real proud of.

What made it so damn funny is that Eddy made it clear to this guy that this particular show was going to be aired in the US tonight/tomorrow, and to be careful not be make a dick of himself. And in true American style, he succeeded in doing the exact opposite of what Eddy warned him of, by jumping the gun with cockiness and stuffing up big time.

We were in absolute hysterics (as were the audience), and the pisstake comments at this end were flying left, right and centre.

Anyway, why am I telling you this? Oh, just letting you guys in the US know, thanks for the laughs, coz your "celebrities" are absolute drongos!!

Oh yeah, did any of the Aussie guys see this last night? There was a damn fine example of a hunky man on there (one of the first ones up), and I was wondering whether he may have been an ex-Manpower member (he sure looks like it), and what is his name?

Give it a rest, please. I actually thought that, with your other recent post, this might be a fun, maybe even interesting topic. Do you thrive on picking fights and creating discord? What have we really done to you to make you feel so compelled to constantly berate us? The Survivor winner is obnoxious, and that has been acknowledged here since Survivor first premiered. If you had a laugh at his expense, fine, but why do you have to continually resort to making broad-based cuts toward all of us ( "...in true American style...")? Despite the smiley face, your true intent is obvious, regardless of the spin you try to put on it.

I'm not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information.

Brissie, I would be very careful, he is gay. Some one might turn this from a AU Vs. US to a Gay Vs. Straight!

Brissie Lions, the guy from the Survivor show is so pathetic that he doesn't even deserve the title celebrity. So because of that, I don't think you can say that our celebrities are all drongos. He's not a very good representative of our celebrities. Otherwise, I would have loved to see his a** schorched on the show and him making a fool out of himself.

Once again, I find that your anti-American, anti-stupid-not-so-survivor-typical-drongo-celebrity-who-isn't-really-or-shouldn't-really-be-a-celebrity comment is totally out of place! hehehe

What is it with people here?

Having a little bit of fun, and people pop up with statements I am saying anti-American stuff. PLEEEEZE. Get outta town. If you guys can't have a little fun, and not take things I say to heart, please don't read it.

Or even better yet, watch the show for yourselves and have a laugh at this guy. He was a court joker to say the least.

Need I mention Christine Aguilera. When recently asked what she thought of Tiger Woods, she responded "Oh, I don't watch tennis". But this might have more to her being blonde

Again you pop up. I have said 15,000 (let's make this 15,001) times, I am not having a go at you (the American public)....if you read it properly, yep, I got a smiley face there, but because I put it there, there has to be more to it right? But if I had of left it out, you still would have berated me. Don't take things I say to heart....you will in time learn my style of humour (because as yet you haven't), and you will soon know when I am joking and when I am not. Take a chill pill dude   (should I leave this smiley face in, or should I take it out..I wouldn't want you to think I am having a go at you, or I wouldn't want you to take it the wrong way).

Who cares if he's gay? Don't faze me in the least, coz I am taking the piss out of him, and having a laugh at his expense (as I am sure you would too if you catch the show I am talking about).

to everyone

The longer you harp on about me being anti-American, there will come a time when I will start posting blatantly anti-American diatribe, instead of fun and humourous pisstaking. My first point of order will have to be how serious you guys are (or have I already covered this elsewhere?  )

Brissie I highly doubt you are taking the piss for the fun of taking the piss! If you did this rarely like your comment on Christine Aguilera that would be cool. But when you come out with the Romanians olympic team, and you and MX5_boy opsts on how grand AU is, it seems you take this very seriously!! People become very defensive when you start saying things about there country, so I think you should chill out on that. Comments like what you wrote, about Christine Aguilera where funny, those are cool, but your posts are a bit much for us in here!

I've been to Australia, met many other Australians over the years, and worked with a woman from Perth for seven years, so don't pass yourself off as displaying typical Australian humor. Some people, you included, hide behind the facade of humor as justification for insulting others. If you don't think your previous cracks about Americans being cowards in wartime (for which you apparently insincerely apologized) weren't blatantly anti-American, then you really don't get it. Because of that alone, any other comments you make are suspect. I don't need a chill pill, dude. You need an attitude check.

I think that show, "Who Want To Be A Millionaire," has to be one of the more ridiculous ones on TV here in the States. And that's saying alot, because there are some pretty sorry shows on the tube these days! It's funny that this so-called "celebrity" made an absolute ass of himself, and even funnier that everyone was in such hysterics about it! I just tend to wonder how, after appearing on a show like that, this guy can ever leave his home again. Heheheh.

But all kidding aside, we do some pretty outrageous things here in the States that have virtually no equal anywhere else. TV shows like "Who Wants...", Jerry Springer, etc. are just some examples of what we allow to be broadcast. As well, we tend to portray more of an image of life here in the States than we are probably aware. Living abroad, I actually have had people ask me, for example, if all teen-agers in Beverly Hills drive Ferraris to school! LOL!

I tend to wonder how much reality is behind some of these shows. Do people actually walk away with millions of dollars, or is it just a big promo? And I hear time and time again that the fights on Springer are all staged, as well as the cases and verdicts on "The People's Court" and "Judge Judy." My questioning of it isn't extensive, as I don't tend to watch these shows, anyway.

On a more personal note, I chat with Scotty pretty often on the web, and he ISN'T anti-American. There's nothing wrong with poking fun of our ridiculous TV, and certainly nothing wrong with anyone having views and paradigms different than ours. This isn's "Airliners.net USA," after all.

I was not taking the piss out of the Romanian olympic team. I was deadly serious and still stand by my comments there 1000%. As some people may know, I am fanatical about sport, and when someone cheats like they did in the Romanian Olympic team, it pisses me off, because we have so many fine athletes from around the world who compete in a legal and legitimate way, only to be outdone by cheats.

People maybe should stop getting so defensive about their countries. One can take the piss out of my country anytime they like, just be prepared for my comeback though (whether it be serious or lighthearted....depending on what mood I am in at the time). And does this mean that you have never, ever, told an Irish joke, or an Indian joke, or a Kiwi joke, or a Pommy joke?

Oh yeah, Australia is a grand place to live or visit. Maybe you should come down here to experience it for yourself. I am very patriotic about my country, but I am not militant when it comes to people bagging us. What's the saying...like water off a duck's back? Or don't give what you can't take (ummm...just checking thread title again  ). You Poms (and some other nationalities which I won't mention in fear of being called a hate-monger) give us Aussies grief about us being criminals. Do I get irate because of it? No. I just say..well look where we live (nine months of surf, sun and fun) and look where you live (where you are lucky to actually see the sun for two months out of the year through the storm clouds).....who do you think got the bum steer in that deal? I won't even mention...oh bugger it...yes I will.....the old joke in Aussie and NZ about the problem that Poms have with washing themselves in water (which by the way was proven true, when I had a boarder a few years ago from the UK, and it took me and my mates six full months of chastising to get the smelly bastard to shower everyday....and this over the hot Perth summer).

Well...let's see; I have lived in Australia now for 26 years, have met a lot of Aussies, have worked with a lot of Aussies, have dated quite a few Aussies, and I even know a woman from Perth (wouldn't be the same one would it?).

Ummm....yes, I do believe my sense of humour is very typical of the average Aussie's humour.....very much a larrikin....anyone who I keep in touch with over the net will know this.

After this "celebrity" stuffed up, they went to an Aussie comedian by the name of Red Symons (people may know him as a musician from the Aussie 70s/80s band "Skyhooks"). He was on this very show a while ago, and also got very cocky with himself and answered the question too quickly, and lost $250,000. Of course, we took the piss out of him then, as we did with this American "celebrity" now (does this mean I am anti-Australian?). Anyway, Eddie McGuire (the host) asked him some crap about when he stuffed up (trying to compare him to this Yankee "celebrity"), to which Red replied "That's ok, because I am an Aussie.", to which to the host and audience, as well as me and my mates laughed at. So yes, this is very atypical of the average Australian's sense of humour (as Ilyushin96M mentioned....it is only poking fun.....better than poking guns right?). So if you really have a problem with me in this, you also have a problem with a lot of other Aussies, in which case I suggest you contact Channel Nine and complain to them, because they are the station responsible for airing such hateful diatribe.

And as for your comments on me apologising. Of course, I was still pissfarting about when I apologised. If you really believe this, you really do need a chill pill, coz I was serious. Even Blind Freddy could have seen that. I can take the piss, as well as get it taken out of me, but if I make a blue (which I already admitted in that case), I am man enough to have the balls to apologise publicly. Don't see anything else like that from other people who have stepped over the mark with me do ya? (which in this case YOU have). Buckley's chance of that! So that it up to you my friend what you wish to believe.

Regarding whether the show is for real or not. Well I can say down here it is; one has to ring a 1-900 number to register, and the producers of the show have to apply for Lottery permits in a range of states. Lottery permits are issued by the various state governments, to ensure that any money/prizes which are offered, are actually paid out.

If it was just one big promo, we (the Aussie public) would see right through it in a flash. Which is most probably why crap like Jerry Springer is no longer on commercial TV down here.....I am being very careful not to take the piss out of this show, just in case some peabrain (well this is the shows demographic isn't it?) takes offence to it.

The situations with the various contestants on the show are very different. You have made numerous very cutting remarks to many people posting on this site, yet the only people you repeatedly "take the piss out of" are Americans. I've heard all your reasons, I just don't believe them, and that is my prerogative. Give somebody else's country as much grief, and I'll believe you don't have a chip on your shoulder with regard to us. I'm sorry to have clearly pissed you off, but you've pissed off more people than just me, so maybe we're even. You'd be surprised how many things I agree with you on, other than this particular issue. Because of your previous gaffe and apology, even a "blind Freddy" should realize that a little more discretion on your part would be appropriate.

OK. Did any of you Yanks see the show I was talking about? And did you really think my comments were in bad taste?

Until then, people can't really comment can they, on whether the situations were different or not.

Oh, and I do take the piss out of other countries, mine included. The only thing is, is that the English, Canadian and Kiwi sense of humour is very similar and it ain't as much fun doing it that way.

And like I have said time and time again. I don't really get pissed off....I get even

I wonder whether the show was going to go to air in US, but after Rich bombed out on the 3rd question. What is 12 x 11 He chose 123. It might now go to air now after he stuffed the question.
I have watched the Australian version and everyone has always gone home with something.
I reckon the home viewer will be a little annoyed as the show was for charity, with half going to charity and the other half to a home viewer.

Kind of funny, reading this thread. I'm reminded of the expression that the Americans and Brits are two peoples, divided by a common language.

One could say the same with regard to the Aussies.

I am still not quite certain just what you mean by using the term, "piss" (although it's reasonably apparent from context). But you should have heard my rellies in Adelaide jumping to shut me up, when I made some comment about some woman's "fanny." Y'see, here in Texas, "fanny" means... well, "bum," and in a polite way (you might say, "fanny" or "behind" instead of "ass," if you're trying to be polite. Of course, that *is* "polite" in the context of making a comment about someone's butt, but that is a discussion for another time...). I'll leave it to you to clarify for others just what fanny means down under.

Also, must clarify an assertion made by a poorly-informed member; DVK made his reference to "the south in the 50's-60's"... as if racism was/is somehow a southern phenomenon. if you travel for a while, you'll discover (as I have) that the worst effective racism (and the worst racial problems) you're likely to see existed in regions outside the south- look at (f'rinstance) Boston school riots, Detroit '67, Watts and south central LA. In any event, I lived in LA for five years and I'd hold the average Houston redneck up against the typical Los Angeleno for fair-mindedness in attitudes about people different than themselves.

No place is perfect... but judge not, lest you be judged.

Please, if you will, forgive the USA for such exports as Rich. I just like Australian TV because they show nekkid wimmen. And I like Australian cars, because you can still buy a real SS. Cool.

...three miles from BRONS, clear for the ILS one five approach...

Wait a minute, Sccutler. I never made any reference to the South in the 50's and 60's. Someone else commented on that. I thought it was stupid, but I didn't respond because I was busy jousting with Brissie. I live in the South, but have been all over the U.S., and I know all too well that racism is not an exclusively southern phenomenon. I live in a part of the South where the media refuses to acknowledge that there's been any progress over the decades, and where the only film footage ever shown is of events that happened in the early 60's. Don't lay this on me, because I didn't make the remarks you referenced to call me "poorly-informed".
