What I don't understand is why the water the temperature of the sea is so cold in Summer...
Does someine have an explanation?

I was in Murcia, but not far away.
It was cold on the surface, never mind at 20m even though I had 110/200 Bar left (over half my supply) I was ready to surface after 30mins because I was very cold (We had to surface because another diver was down to 40 already).
And we had thick full length wet suits on. 1m there makes the difference between swimming in warm and freezing cold water, with severe thermoclines.
The only other place I dived (Thailand) the temperature change was gradual and minimal.

Good question! Tides as someone said it probably true, but remember it is also 40+ air temperature so it is rather relative. The Mediterranean seems warmer (though I don't know if temperature wise it is actually warmer) because it is cooler (and more humid) in the north.

This is a map of today's sea water temperature in Europe. I don't think water in the Mediterranean sea is much different to that from other areas at the same latitude. And this stays the same in summer too.
Geographic temperature anomalies are usually caused by currents (such as the Gulf current which brings warm water to northwest Europe or the Labrador current which makes cold water flow from the Labrador Peninsula down to the US northeast). The Mediterranean sea, however, is not known to be under the influence of any important current and so its water is at a normal temperature for its latitude (it just tends too cool down a little faster in winter and warm up a bit faster in summer as its smaller than oceans).

it shouldn't be. What happens is that if you are outside in 100F temps and take a dip in 80deg F water it will feel COLD. However once you're in the water and start swimming it shoudlnt feel cold anymore.
I was in Palm Beach this past weekend and the surf was 77F according to the information the lifeguard had written on a public board. Everyone seemed to be afraid to get in but I decided I wanted to snorkel a bit.. and yes it was a little cold initially but once in, the temperature felt perfect (I hate cold water).
The central Florida coast is about at the same latitude as Eilat but the water gets a lot warmer during the summer (reaching the low 90's)

That's not a lot different than Hawaii for example, where the water is not as warm as the Caribbean areas that lie at the same latitude. In Hawaii it has to do with the ocean currents. Same thing with the Galapagos, right in the Equator but the water is chilly because of a cold current coming from the south.
For some reason the Red Sea has cooler temperatures than other tropical seas at the same latitudes, maybe it's the depth? Can't be because of the ocean currents since it's enclosed.

you see, in Zurich, people start swimming in the lake (real swimming of hundreds of meters, not just wetting the feet) when water temperatures exceed 18 degrees centigrade. And when it is as high as 24 degrees, some find it rather too warm . I like it if it is above 25 degrees .

I am sure you remember the incredible August 3 summer ago (I think it was 3 summers ago). It was hotter than any place I know of.... Temperatures exceeding 40 C. We went to Vierwaldstattersee to refresh ourselves but it was more of a torture.... And there were warnings as to not to swim in the lakes due to high level of bacteria produced by heat.... What a summer it was....

It was a tremendous summer, in 03 ! And never mind, Swiss scientists always warn about bacteria in the water or in the air (it is either too hot or too cold, too dry or too humid), about too much sun or insufficient, about too much orange juice or the contrary.

Actually ME AVN, i heard that if you're going to be in the sun and take enough vitamin C (which orange juice has) it won't damage your skin. I woudln't risk it though.
Isn't there a weak EL Nino this year? The Eastern Pacific have gotten a much more active than normal hurricane season (warmer water).
I have to say I quickly read all that about why the water in Eilat is cool. They mention thermoclines and other things but being that place is basically closed and narrow, it still doesn't make sense to me.

anyway, the summer 03 was excellent in Central Europe, where average people do not care much about el-Nino, while the scientists are all out for such stories.
