From Drudge:
A 22-year-old Chicago man has been charged with plotting a terrorist attack on a Rockford suburban mall. The suspect is accused of planning to use guns and explosives during the holiday shopping season. The suspect is described as an unaffiliated 'lone wolf-style terrorist'. A press conference is forthcoming...

And all over CNN and FOX now...

He was apparently planning his attack soon, on a Saturday or other big shopping day just before Christmas, to kill/hurt the most number of people. Police won't say specifically how the determined this plot, only that they do watch in various places for signs of such possible situations and that leads developed to require an arrest.
One has to wonder about the plots that may not be caught in time.

More on this...Surprise surprise the guy is a Muslim convert (according to CNN):

Derrick Shareef, 22, of Rockford, was arrested Wednesday when he met with an undercover agent in a parking lot to trade a set of stereo speakers for four hand grenades and a handgun.

Federal officials said Shareef planned to set off four hand grenades in garbage cans at the CherryVale shopping mall in Rockford, about 90 miles northwest of Chicago.

He was charged with one count of attempting to damage or destroy a building by fire or explosion and one count of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.

Officials said Shareef had been under investigation since September, when he told an acquaintance that "he wanted to commit acts of violent jihad against targets in the United States as well as commit other crimes."

Gah, this is getting tiresome. Why are some of them so bloody determined to blow themselves up?

Very glad that the police caught this...seems to me like this sort of thing could be easy to do, too, so it was a very fine job.

Kind of hits close to home for me. I used to shop at that mall up until 1 and a half years ago when I moved to D.C. My mom and my sister frequent that mall at least 2 to 3 times a week. Great job to the law enforcment agencies that foiled this.

Another convert to Islam, gone haywire . . . gonna blow up a mall with hand grenades* . . . great, and the Islamic world wants to know why 'they are picked on'?

Isn't that obvious?

And spare me the  redflag  about McVeigh wasn't Islamic, will you please.

*Where was he going to get hand grenades? Manufacture them? Have them delivered by other Extremist assholes? Is there a ready supply of hand grenades on the streets? Not in ANC . . . plenty of guns, no grenades though.

Actually, according to the criminal complaint filed, he was planning to attack the mall on December 22 and detonate several hand grenades in the food court and surrounding area. His own statement was that his intention was "to disrupt Christmas." His intention was to purchase hand grenades through underworld connections-fortunately he ended up getting connected with a UC.

Fortunately it appears that he was acting alone as an individual, not part of a larger plot. From what I gather from reading the complaint and affidavit, he realy wanted to attack the local courthouse but felt it to be too risky. He chose the mall because it's an easier target. Mall owners and managers have been concerned about the possibility of terrorist actions for several years now. From what I've heard from industry sources, they're frankly relieved that this is the only major threat to date to have happened.

Frankly I am surprised that these sorts of folks haven't though of attacking the easiest target of all-a school. Any decent terrorist could easily take most schools and kill 100+ students before the police would be able to respond. To beat the terrorists, you have to think like them.

They don't want to know. They already know why.

Good investigative work. Glad they nabbed him before he could kill anybody.

I don't think it's matter of converting to Islam, then going haywire. I think it's more a matter of one sad, ef'd up person that decided he was going to look for a reason to kill innocent people to make himself feel better about his miserable life. The haywire part was probably there way before converting. Good thing they caught the crazy before he did any real damage.

... hmm i guess i should have complained how i was forced to resign by the unfair treatment by a US regional airline, when some 'mormon' dude showing his dick was kept employed and i was suggested that i should resign because i refused to fly with a training captain who used profanities and some claims about me not knowing how to fly..
.. I guess the people who commited the acts of Columbine were muslims too , eh?
How come you call on Christianity when a sicko goes into the post office and kills other people but you are so fast to judge Islam, when another sicko wants to blow up people in the mall?

People like you make me sick.. US is becoming extremely racists againts the people who don't have a name like John, Sean or whatever.

Apple and oranges, Christians don't commit acts of terror to please God or for a holy war.

Apple and oranges,

Hardly. There are plenty of examples throughout history where "Christians" have committed atrocities "In the name of God." We committed plenty of atrocities with the Westward Expansion as we stole the land from the natives and murdered them en masse. One such atrocity was the forcible removal of the Cherokees through the Trail of Tears, a journey on which thousands died. How about the forced reeducation of Native American youth in Indian Schools in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by "good Christians?" How about Sand Creek where the United States Army SLAUGHTERED hundreds of innocent tribal elders, women and children?

Our government has an established history of being hypocritical and other countries such as Iran and North Korea cannot be blamed for viewing us with a certain degree of mistrust. We honor only the treaties that are to our advantage and walk on those that we choose not to observe.
