There are a number of news reports out today (Monday) that the USA Government, including it's Secret Service, spied in the UK and EC on Princess Diana up to the time of her death in 1997. The US Secret Service has authority to protect not only top government dignateries, but foreign ones when they do or before they visit the USA. Apparently some of the spying included illegal wiretaps on her telephones. Some may have been done with or without the cooperation of the UK's MI-5, MI-6 or UK agencies that directly protect their royality. This issue has come up as part of the long-delayed UK investigation of her death.
What may have triggered the spying? Diana and her sons (which included a future King of the UK) were invited to stay at the home in NY's Long Island of a Mr. Fosterman (a very rich investor she had a close relationship up until early 1997) for a few weeks during the Summer of 1997. The US's Secret Service under the Authority of President Clinton did an investigation and suggested to UK authorities that the Princess and her sons not go on there due to security issues. Diana then got closer to Dodi, develop a relationship to him and tragicly died with him. Why the Secret Service continued their spying on Diana is very questionable, but one has to wonder of her relationship with a Islamic man, with a father that had a number of hassles with the UK government and people or the fear that the step father of a future King of the UK could be Islamic.
One more thing to make the USA look bad caused by shortsighted and stupid Presidential and security decisions.

Ironically, so did practically every major worldwide tabloid newspaper, entertainment magazine and news network.

Huh, I'm so envious. Why does the US Secret Service never spy on me?

I haven't even seen poor MI-6 over my shoulder lately. They seem to just ignore me!  confused

I could tell you a few words to say if you want the Secret Service to spy and pay you a visit.
