The other thread gave me this idea..

Well I have to say the Luxor is bad but the worst IMO is the Sahara. I know it's a kiddie joint but I went in there with a friend once and it was a joke. The casino was terrible. Most tables were dirty and riddled with cigarette burns. Every dealer had a poor attitude and for the most part seemed they wanted to be anywhere but there. Half the crowd was falling down drunk and they had maybe 3 cocktail waitresses in the whole place, my friend had to go to the bar to get us drinks. The kicker was going to the bathroom there was some young college kid sitting on the floor crying his eyes out at the entrance after he lost all his money and his gf just sitting there not knowing what to do. I wouldn't go back in there if you paid me. I would rather stay at Circus Circus!  biggrin

My least favorite hotel by reputation is Circus Circus, for a number of reasons. However, if we're talking about motels, I would definitely stay way from the HoJo's (Howard Johnsons) next to the airport, which I stayed in by mistake one night. By the time I arrived that night/early morning, it was too late to find another place to stay and I was highly unimpressed by what I found.

I would avoid staying at anything but a two-star hotel or above in Vegas, and that's only if I knew the property. (If I didn't, I wouldn't stay at anything below a three-star.) That's just my personal choice.

All of them.

They all suck!
Whole damn city can be deeded over to California!

Of course I am speaking from the point of view of airline layovers there. I live in Nevada and don't give a rat's ass about gaming (don't call it gambling -that implies that you think it is possible to win) or the shows. So the hotels don't have shuttles. You have to PAY to get from the airport to the hotel.

When you arrive, the check-in desk is at one corner of the property and the hotel elevators are diagonally across the property as distant from the desk as it is possible to place them. This is so that you will have to walk past all the crap tables and crap roulettte wheels and crap slot machines, through a cloud of cigarette smoke and a dense beer fog to the elevators. It is their hope that this will make your wallet suddenly uncomfortable in your pocket.

There is cable TV in the rooms. Five channels, two of them teach you how to play the various games downstairs, one is in Spanish and the other two are local from Las Vegas or Pahrump. They don't want you in your room! They want you downstairs handing your money over to its rightful owner.

OTOH they do set a pretty good table. (Food is quite a bit cheaper in Reno) If you are dumping money down the rathole fast enough they will comp all your drinks. They do this to clear your head so you make better decisions regarding your gaming. They also have ATMs so you don't have to quit just because you are broke.

Rooms are fairly cheap, food is very cheap, drinks are free and we don't have a state income tax or corporate income tax and all of it is paid for by all you people who come here and BREAK EVEN.

You all break even. No one ever admits to losing.

The check is in the mail.
I broke even in Las Vegas.

But hey, come on out. Everyone seems to love it there.

Excalibur blows. Nothing impressed me during our stay.

Imperial Palace is waaaay past its prime and has the air of a skanky, old whore.

I didn't find the Stardust that bad (I only ventured to the casino part), but the Casino Royale is a dump (At least the casino part is). I ventured down to Casino Royale at about 6:30 Saturday morning during the previous LAS Meetup and did very well there gaming wise. I swear that the felt on the craps table was so threadbare one can see the carpet underneath. The only thing the place has going for it is the cheap gaming. I can afford to play craps down there the way I like to, as they have low minimums (Usually $3), which means I can afford to make odds bets after the come out.

I have to agree in regards to Circus Circus. I think the late Hunter S. Thompson's description of the place in "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas" sums it up best:

"Circus Circus is what the whole hep world would be doing Saturday night if the Nazis had won the war. This was the Sixth Reich."

My first trip to Vegas, I ended up over there a few hours after checking into the Riv. I started having flashbacks to the Bazooko Circus scenes in the movie version of "Fear and Loathing" (Circus Circus wouldn't let them film there or use the name, so the scene they are staggering into the Bazooka Circus was filmed a few doors down @ the Stardust) and started laughing out loud a little bit.

Have to agree with that assessment. The only reason why I even stayed there my last trip was because it was cheaper than the Flamingo. You know a place sucks when even the cab drivers don't like picking up or dropping off fares there. The only way I'll ever stay there again would be if they sent me a really sweet room rate for a Luv Tub room or better.

Flew into Las Vegas after a full day at work on the Delta red eye..got in exhausted..checked into the Luxor..which even at that hour was filled with kids..and was given a room in the tower..quieter..and nice.
Got into town last year with two co-workers only to find that the convention had botched our reservations at the Venetian. Wound up at Harrahs..old, but clean--got a suite because they had no more smoking rooms available.
Stayed at the Aladdin earlier this year..in a tower room overlooking Bellagio's
fountains. Nice room..construction at the hotel a turnoff.
C's Palace..years ago..very nice.
Best meal I had..steak..at Del Frisco's in the Howard Hughes complex...

I would say NY NY is a dissapointment but far from the worst. It's small but at least it's clean.

The last time I ventured into the 'Dust was in April of 2004. I didn't even make down there for one last visit when I was in Vegas back in March.

Yeah but with Tropicana and their $19 rates, it can't be beat! I do agree though, the Garden rooms are ages old. I hear they are going to do a major renovation. Don't know when though.

Id say Circus Circus for The strip. But overall it would be the El cortez. It has a very cheap, off course location about 6 blocks from the Fremont experience. The Casino Floor was smokey as hell!  no  [On oath, no exagguration] You Could Wave the smoke and make a mini tornado like you see in a sink. [/oath, no exaggurration] Glad i never stayed in that dump. Built in the 40s, still looks like it too.

Yo gotta come to Atlantic City if you wanna see the dinosaurs. You can watch old grannie pump nickels into a slot machine and chain-smoke while their on oxygen.

HoJo's by the airport..... YUCK!!!!!

Sahara is old and worn.

I liked Bally's and Luxor. Never had a problem with them.
Stratoshere is OK only because it is usually so cheap. I mean inexpensive. Rooms are nice size and clean. But don't walk around the neighborhood up there unless you are looking for crack.

Sounds like Biloxi. My grandfather jokes that in some of the casinos down there, it looks like a convalescence home because of all of the old folks, walkers, wheelchairs and oxygen tanks.

In another life, while waiting for a pilot job to open up, I worked for a few months in a Casino. Horrible!!!

One evening I was near the door at the very southwest corner and an old lady came in on a walker. It took her a minute to cross the twenty feet from the door to where I stood. She asked where the bingo parlor was, and I didn't know how to answer her. It was near the opposite corner, almost a quarter mile away. If you know how casinos are laid out - labyrithine fashion - you understand there was simply no way to direct her.

The easiest way would have been for her to walk back out the door she'd just entered and hailed a taxi to take her around to the opposite entrance but I didn't want to suggest that. Instead I pointed off to the northeast and told her: "Walk that way until you are lost or can't go any farther, then ask again." I sometimes wonder if she ever made it.
