So how was your 2006?

Like everybody, I had good and bad times.

Good:
Mr. Harlot (  couple  )
Good curling friends and going to curl in New Jersey
Visiting Mr. Harlot's family's home country of Portugal
At work, a promotion and successfully leading a very difficult project to completion
Healing from my back problems and being able to curl again
Having another year with my three dear furry children
Seeing the Pet Shop Boys in concert (another Barenaked Ladies concert too, which was excellent)
Meeting more A.nutters in April (YYZ) and August (SEA)
Managing open houses at our curling club after the Olympics (CRAZY - 1200 people in 3 weekends) and being recognized by club members for my efforts

Bad:
Herniated disc in my back (while in New Jersey, at that)
Our curling friend Sommar's death (she was 31, her first child was a week old)
Watching another friend endure his dad's death, and the death of several fellow police officers
A summer of forced leisure due to my back problem and the resulting weight gain  Sad
Wild fall weather here in Seattle, including last week's windstorm - I have never been so scared for so many hours in my life

How about you?

But that was when I ruled the world

Great cruise with my daughter through Greece.
Birthday in Boston with dinner at the Top of thr Hub.
Finished my online Associate's degree with a 3.76 GPA.
My daughter continues to be happy.
My family is healthy.

Not so good:
Turned 50, although I don't look it and I certainly don't act like it.
Discovered the discs in my neck are degrading, so I have to wait to see if the bones fuse on their own or if I'll need surgery. Meanwhile..pain management.
Tore some ligaments in my foot.
Haven't dated in what feels like 100 years.
Stlll haven't met Viggo.

Good:
- Got hired full-time at P&W
- Got my health going the correct direction, finally
- Went to the Staind/Three Days Grace/Soil concert in September
- Now have my own (technically, 'inherited') place
- My grandfather, who was likely days away from death after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's (wrongly... it was pain-killer induced dementia), got the knee replacement he needed, and can now move about like he was 20 years younger.
- My entire family is happy and healthy

Bad:
- Money is really tight (hospital bills, student loans)
- Can't find that special girl I met 4 years ago (when she was engaged... she never married that prick, I know for a fact)
- My friend now doesn't like to do anything that doesn't involve drinking or selling mortgages, and literally is incapable of going to any social setting without trying to do either.
- I only get to see my sister once in a while now that she lives in England
- My dad is still having issues finding full-time work

I'm going to approach this in a different way...Rather than just list the good & bad separately, it'll be more of a timeline:

The year started out great. Received my first DSLR in late January, and I couldn't have been any happier. February rolled around, and to celebrate my mother's 50th birthday, I booked us on a seven-day Caribbean cruise for late April. Life was good.

Jumping forward to Easter Sunday...only a week to the day before the cruise was to set sail. Murphy's Law must have kicked in, because as I was playing a game with my nephew outside, I dislocated my right shoulder.  Sad Needless to say, we had to modify the shore excursion reservations on the cruise from anything requiring upper-body strength (climbing Dunn's River Falls in Ocho Rios, swimming with the sting rays in Grand Cayman) to those less demanding. However, after some last-minute thought while onboard the ship, I made the decision that I was a strong enough swimmer with my three other extremities to complete the stingray trip safely. I was right, and it turned out to be a great trip nevertheless!  Smile (Pics on request  Wink )

May and June were relatively uneventful, other than the fact that I had limited physical capabilities at work due to the injury. July was just about the same, except I had a good deal of my strength and movement back.

August...bad news. Cutbacks at the job, I was the least senior person in my role, I had to go. That sucked. But it also showed me just how stressed out I really was, and didn't even realize it until that point. So it was good to finally get a break...

September and October were also relatively uneventful, and then came November. What better way to start the month than with a phone call from my old college roomate telling me that one of our good friends from back in school had just died in a plane crash that morning in a training accident.  crying  That hurt. But I'm sure it was nothing compared to what his family was feeling...  frown

I also got the opportunity that month to visit Fort Knox, Kentucky, to see my brother graduate from Army Basic Training.  Smile It was good to see him, and I'm sure he was even more thrilled to see us! Big grin

Finally, here we are in December. I couldn't think of a better way to finish off the year than with a call from my new employer, informing me that I had gotten the job! I've been on for a week already thus far, and I've got no complaints whatsoever (with none in sight).

All in all, it's been a rollercoaster year, and I'm hoping 2007 will be a little more tame.  crossfingers

Happy holidays!

Bryan

I'd have to say that the greatest highlight was my sister's wedding in Sedona, AZ. Not only was it a beautiful wedding and time to meet my brother-in-law's wonderful family, but I also revisited Sedona for the first time since I've been in remission from chronic depression. It was like being there for the first time, because I could actually enjoy it, see and understand the beauty, feel the sun on my face, and all of the glories of it.

And I finally took the plunge into the medical field... I'm half way through the nursing program and I love it!

Are you kidding me? They should be bloody ecstatic you didn't major in Party 101 during freshman year. Unless you're another Einstein, most kids don't come back with a 4.0 freshman year. Freshman year is a stressful time for kids...adjustment to new living conditions, roommates, college-level courses, no parents around to do the cleanup/laundry etc...

I think you should be proud of your 3.33.

Thanks. Want to e-mail that entire post to my parents? haha.

They made another thread last month, before I began my final exams. They told me that if I did not come back with a 3.6 this semester (what I need to get onto the Dean's List) they will refuse to pay for me to come back and will send me to state school. I think its an atrocious threat but knowing my parents, it's completely possible.

Anyway, not to hijack the thread.

All in all 2006 has had up's and down's. I would say overall it hasn't been bad but I would like to forget about a few things.

Good:

Work is going extremely well
Trips to Miami, Los Angeles, St. Maarten, San Juan, Key West, New York, and various places in Europe etc
Got a new family car
Met some amazing people and regained friendships with people I've missed
Met a celebrity who is friends with my Dad's friend
Got it on with an old flame who is lovely

Bad:

Aunt diagnosed with Cancer
Partner left me, bitch
Garden was burgled, bikes stolen
Lost a friend due to a disagreement
Debts increased, reviewing in 2007

Probably more, but I'm not thinking straight.

Good
Getting the '59 Les Paul I've wanted since I was 14.
Adopting a new cat.
Buying a new house.
Being able to expand the business and hire 3 more people.
The business having it's best year ever and post-tax profits doubling from last year.
A fantastic holiday with the missus in England, part of which was celebrating the old man's 70th birthday.
My dead cat returning home (there's a thread around here somewhere)

Bad
Wife's last remaining grandparent passing away.
Having to fire my best programmer.
Spending several days grieving for a cat that we thought had died (but came back again, see above).

Generally, it's been a pretty good year for the IFE household.
