Why Don't People Respect Fast Lane Anymore?

In the last two days, I have driven more than 350 miles for work related meetings. I only live 2 miles away from work, so I usually can't stand traffic. But I have noticed this getting worse as the years go by and is something that I absolutely HATE about California.

Is the g**damned people who drive in the faster lanes at slow lane speeds!!!  banghead

I mean, here in SMF, it is FASTER to drive in the slow lane during rush hour! I mean, WTF? And some are driving slow in the slow lane, and then shift to faster lanes! Or you have 3 cars lined up on 3 lanes going at the same speed...

So, I confirmed it with a guy from Indiana today, that here in California there is hardly any respect for driving FAST in the FAST lane.

Rant off...

Find the same thing here in Ontario. One province where the fast lane is respected is Quebec, they know how to drive well. Down the highway 401 here on a trek that I make routinely I find people going side by side at the same speed, quite annoying, I'll normally flash the high beams until they get the picture.

We usually only have 2 lanes in Switzerland, and we have the exact same problem: people drive slow in the fast lane and vice-versa. Maybe people think that driving slow in the fast lane gets you there quicker  Smile

Same thing in S. FLA. If there's a good gap, a good bet is that the person slowing things down is yakking away on their cel phone. You flash your lights so they can move over and they give you the Hawaiian Good Luck Sign (You're Number 1).

That is really a Northern California problem.
Go down to LA and drivers fully respect the fast line. If you go any slower than 85 on any unclogged SoCal freeway, you WILL get ran in to the center divider or rear-ended.

As far as Indiana goes (my homestate), it's illegal to stay in the fast lane. It's called a 'passing lane' so nimrods like the drivers out here don't form these slow moving road blocks.

Dude, you're joking, right?

I'm so f***ing glad I never had a car when I was in LA. I probably would have started running people off the road out of sheer rage. All the blond-haired soccer moms in their friggin Expeditions don't have a friggin clue. I swear, they are all unaware that there are actually other cars on the freeway.

Ah well, I love Massachusetts, where we're not BAD drivers. We're just assholes.  Smile

Same thing up and down I-95 here on the east coast.

Most Americans are crappy drivers, to be honest.

Not joking at all. As much as a I dislike SoCal, I'll credit them for being great drivers, for the USA at least. Oh and as long as it's not raining or snowing(mountians).
When ever there is a storm, almost all of California drivers are terrible.

Road lane disipline is very low in the USA in general. The left or far left lane is for passing per law. I have driven in the UK on their motorways and found they follow this law (in their case the fast lane is the right/far right lane).
In reality, on a 3x3 divided M-way in the UK, I found that slow lane was for trucks (lorryies), vehicles towing trailers (like caravans, utility), those with small vehicles, wanted to drive at or below the speed limit or about to exit the motorway. The center lane were mostly those driving at or slightly above the speed limit. The fast lane was for those passing those in the center lane and/or generally diving over the speed limit. I only wish USA drivers (I live and mostly drive in the New Jersey - Metro NY City area).

I mean, here in SMF

Sacramento is something of an anomaly, even in California. It probably has the greatest variance between the faster cars and the slower ones of any place I've driven. I've seen people cruise right past CHP on I-80 doing 80 or better, but you see a percentage of the cars doing 60-65. Every time I drive through Sac I see a pair of ricers averaging a hundred or better, going from the diamond lane all the way to the exit lanes, back and forth getting around slower (80-85mph) traffic.

When he was 16 my son got a ticket and I went to juvie traffic court with him. I was expecting the judge to scold him and maybe show him dead-teenagers pictures. Instead the judge minimized his offense, completely trivializing a 16 year old with thirty minutes' driving experience doing 75 mph on a city street. I was furious. Anyway, the judge told him about driving into Sacramento on I-80 and being passed (he was doing 80) by a woman READING A BOOK. Not a glance at a map or something, she was reading a Danielle Steele paperback!

I prefer to use the fast lane only as a passing lane but it is just not practical. Around Reno the acceleration lanes at the various interchanges are far too short or blend right into an offramp in about 300 yards. It just becomes necessary to drive in the fast lane to allow cars onto the freeway at all.

Quoting Superfly (Reply 12):

One of the few good things about "Exodus - Phase II, the evacuation of California by business and professional people" is that they are crashing their cars in record numbers. In the light snowfall of last weekend there may have been as many as a thousand fender-benders on the streets of Reno, almost all involving people who moved here from California last summer, many still had their California plates and were ticketed for that. Fifty on one uphill stretch of city street in one evening. Bad news is these morons will run MY insurance rates up.

That, and the fact that a lot of the folks that do know it's for passing will STILL stay out there, and sometimes even speed up when you try to move around them on the right..... it's plain and simple lack of courtesy and manners.

I have found recently that people don't care how they drive.

The last couple of days it has been really foggy here, and the amount of people who are not driving with their headlights on. My mum flashed her lights at someone yesterday because they hadn't got their lights on... and she braked  Yeah sure

And also the ammount of people who sit in the fast lane after overtaking and don't go over and there is nothing in front of them.

The problem is that NOBODY has any respect for lane laws. Take a drive anywhere along the 5, 405, 605, 57, 55, 91, 60, 10, or 210, and count how many people lane weave. Not because people are going slow, but because they are impatient.

Example - I was passing two trucks and a slow car in the fast lane the other day. I was doing about 75mph on a 3-lane part of the 5 between Buena Park and Norwalk - a 55mph zone - and was in the 'Fast' lane. Yet, even at that speed, and even with me clearly passing vehicle in the 2 lanes to my right, some punk decided to ride about 6 feet from my bumper, then went lane weaving over the carpool lane and right back in front of me again, all because he didn't want to wait 5 seconds for me to finish passing and pull over to the right.

This happens all the time. Especially with many...how shall I say...non-natives who are from countries where driving is pretty much ruthless (and the insurance demographic reflects this). Nobody respects the rules of the road, and part of that is the lane hogging epidemic.

Many years ago, the 50 in SMF was a pleasure, with plenty of lane respect. But then houses started to go around there, and things went to hell.

I partially blame people from the Bay Area and La that transplanted here for this.

Yep...it boils down to 2 things..DRIVER TRAINING and ENFORCEMENT of existing laws...here is a thought, do what the German police do..fine the heck out of the offenders. Once the State discovers how much of a revenue enhancer this could be..and they would make tons of $...the left lane would be wide open most of the time. How many times have you folks seen a person poking along in the left lane and a state trooper a few car lenghts away not enforcing the "Delay Of 5 Vehicles" signage?

Cheers...
