Trying to find a date of how old a map is (I know what you were thinking). I was rummaging around our attic last night and find a nice find I think. A world map. I was looking through it and trying to find out how old it is but I couldn't find a date. So I'll give you some details. It is made by Rand-Mcnally and has some peculiar names of things I didn't recognize. For example...

-Dominion of Canada
-Union of South Africa
-Philippines were still a US territory
-Borneo is a French territory
-Much of the Middle East was labeled as Persia

This is all I can remember so If y'all could help out that would be great.

Quoting TZ757300 (Thread starter):
-Much of the Middle East was labeled as Persia

Iran became Iran in 1979

Quoting TZ757300 (Thread starter):
-Philippines were still a US territory

The US recognised the independence of the Philippines July 4th, 1946

Quoting TZ757300 (Thread starter):
-Borneo is a French territory

Never been: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borneo

It's been:
-British
-Dutch
-Indonesian
-Malasian

Quoting TZ757300 (Thread starter):
-Union of South Africa

South Africa was converted from a dominion in the Commonwealth to a separate Republic in 1961.

Quoting TZ757300 (Thread starter):

-Dominion of Canada

Was in use until the 1950's

Rand McNally started printing maps in 1872.

So your map is from between 1872 and 1946

Hmm, maybe I have mistaken (Br.) for (Fr.)

Quoting JRadier (Reply 1):
So it is older then 1946!

Lovely, that means I have a new antiquity to my collection.

Let me correct you, in 1979 just happened Islamic revolution, name of country from Persia to Iran was changed in 1935 by Shah.

In that case:

In the early 19th century, British and Dutch colonists entered into agreement to exchange trading ports under their controls; the eastern side of Borneo under the Dutch colonial empire and western side under the British.

Lasted until WOII, after which it is a bit uncertain.

Should look further  Wink. Thank you for correcting me.

So your map is from before 1935 it seems. If I were you I would get it taxated, not only for the value but for the date as well. Isn't there a year on the map?

And to refine the responses just one small amount, Union of South Africa came into being on May 31 1910 so the map was likely printed between 1910 and 1935.
If the map is intact I would be very surprised if there is not a date of some sort on it.

Cheers

Fits right in with:
-Big Brother
-Germany defeating the Netherlands (football, not the war, that's the only time we 'won', albeit with 'some' help)
-Der Sendung mit der Maus
-Rudi Carell

I really hope that die Maus and Rudi Carell never participate in a Big Brother show, just to play football for the Dutch (and defeat the German team), just to fly with an AF A 300 to THR afterwards.  Wink

We make the best. You're coming to get some during the AMS meet?

I will definitely come to AMS next year, but I am not sure if I should go for the A.net AMS Spotter Meeting or for the Surinam A/L scenic flight. I will decide within the next few weeks.

By the way, a meeting in AMS would break our old tradition which is to meet at ZRH every second year.  Silly  Wink

It's longer ago, last time we met in ZRH was this year. Time before that I still had my film camera, so at most 2003.

Why not introduce AMS on alternating years tho  Wink

I remember that, your cam was broken and you got some stickers from the check-in agent to keep the battery compartment closed. Big grin

Sounds good actually, additionally to spotting I can go on a shopping spree at the famous shops.  Wink

One little thing, the only way to truly authenticate the age of the map is to have it appraised by a professional. It is possible its from 2006 for an past time. but if you just want to know what time period the map represents perhaps visit a library

True, but I know this is from the early century. It was box of stuff from my Grandma marked "OLD" so I presume it wasn't purchased too recently. Also, the map pages are a deep yellow so they have to be aged somewhat.
