It's time to start planning the Summer '07 holiday. I would really like to try and get to St. Maarten this year.
Anyone who's been, or is planning a trip there have any advice on the best way to get there and places to stay (I'm think we should be at the Maho Beach, but I guess there are other places).
Any advice appreciated.

We are travelling from the UK (NCL) and there are 2 adults + 2 kids (13 & 7). We need to go in the school holidays (late July/August)

I was at Maho Beach for the day in August. All I would say to you is be careful with the kids. When I was there there was quite alot of broken glass amongst the sand. I would also advise that you keep them close when something takes off! I was being pelted with sand by a Dash 8!
Transport is easy and the taxi's are an easy way to get round, they're also good value, and the drivers are happy to do island tours for a resonable price! If you are going to hire a car I'd be careful because the roads seemed quite hectic!
Beer is cheap on the island, which I'm sure you're glad to hear Go here to find out alot more from the island than what I can tell you!

I would recommend staying on the French side and spending most of the time there. The Dutch side is cool, and of course Maho Beach is there, but I find it a little too commercialized. Of course I spent a lot of time at Maho Beach and the surrounding bars/clubs, but I don't know how appropriate that is since you have kids. Anyway, I'm not advocating not spending any time at Maho, just not most of it. I understand that saying that here is considered blasphemy, but SXM offers a lot and it would be a pitty not trying to explore the whole island.
As for getting around the island, I really recommend renting a car. You can get one for really cheap considering that you would also be going there in the slow season. Driving is not bad at all, and a simple free map is all you need to get around.
