Disclaimer:

This is not meant to be a gun control thread. I have my opinion, and I don't care what yours is on the issue. I am simply looking for help regarding a gun I'll buy regardless of anti-gun statements.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Hey guys. I'm thinking about buying a gun from a friend (yes, through an FFL of course). It is a S&W Sigma 380, used, but not many rounds fired since the last factory refresher (maybe 500 or so). Any idea of what could be a good price on this gun, as I don't know and neither does he.

Looks like those are bringing about $300 NIB (plus shipping and FFL xfer) on a particular website I use as a market value comparison. Check your IM for more details.

You know, KelTec has their new single-stack 9mm out now and it's really small plus it's in a reasonable caliber. Most experts (and even me too) consider .380 to be the barely minimum caliber acceptable for defense purposes. It's more expensive and doesn't have nearly the variety of ammo that you can get in 9mm. If there's any way you can, I wish I could talk you into some kind of 9.

Edit: And you can pick up a Taurus 9mm PT111 (very concealable and 12 rounds) for about $350.

I would like a 9 mm ideally, as ammo is (almost) half the price if I buy the WWB at Walmart Big grin I just figured I could get a really good deal by buying his, and one can never have too many guns now, can you? Big grin

Seriously, save your $$$ and get at least a 9mm. I gave my .380 to my brother-in-law. We went shooting last month and a box of FMJ ammo was $ 12.99.

Yeah, but ANC will be here shortly telling you that 9 is inadequate and to get a .45.

Seriously, I have a .380 and it's only because it is very tiny (KT P3-AT) and I carry it only when wearing a bathing suit or something where it would be impossible to conceal anything else. That Sigma has no size advantage over some other handguns that shoot more potent calibers.

With a .380 you'll get a bunch of expensive small holes, unless you are reloading. Been there, done that though, reloading .380 sucks!

Sigma series

A Sigma pistolSmith & Wesson introduced the Sigma series of recoil-operated, locked-breech semi-auto pistols in 1994 with the Sigma 40, followed by the Sigma 9. Sigma pistols bore so much similarity to Glocks that users could reportedly interchange many parts between Glock and Sigma models. The similarities were so great that many pundits referred to the Sigma series as 'Swocks', a playful contraction of S&W and Glock. As a result, Glock initiated a patent infringement lawsuit against Smith & Wesson, which paid an undisclosed sum (the amount of three million dollars has been theorized) to Glock for infringement of their patents. S&W thereupon received the rights to continue the production of Sigma line but they were forced to redesign the pistol's trigger mechanism so that it did not infringe upon Glock's patents.
