Shocking, bone-chilling news! House Republicans failed to cooperate with federal prosecutors in order to protect the corrupt former Republican Rep. Randy Cunningham. In power in Congress for just a week, the Democratic leadership is working with prosecutors who were driven to issue subpoenas to resolve this inquiry, that Republican leadership attempted to sweep under the rug.

House Democrats May Aid Corruption Inquiry
By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK

WASHINGTON, Jan. 8 — The new Democratic House leaders are negotiating with federal prosecutors about complying with subpoenas related to former Representative Randy Cunningham’s corrupt sale of military contracts, potentially accelerating a dormant inquiry.

The subpoenas, disclosed late last month in the Congressional Record, request documents from the House Appropriations, Intelligence and Armed Services Committees and demand a response by Jan. 11.

Mr. Cunningham, a California Republican, pleaded guilty more than a year ago to steering tens of millions of dollars in federal money to military contractors in exchange for over $2.4 million in bribes, using his position on the House military spending panel to insert special provisions for contracts into military bills.

[...]

The federal prosecutors, based in San Diego, sought for months without success to reach agreement with the former House Republican leaders to obtain the documents without subpoenas. The subpoenas coincide with the takeover of the House by Democrats, who campaigned on a promise to replace corruption with honesty and openness. The Democrats also have less incentive to protect the Republican former committee chairmen and staff members."

Well I did try to find the article from another fair and balanced news source, you know, like The Washington Times, or Fox News, but darnit, I couldn't find a thing about Republican corruption!

While I'm glad they are assisting in the investigation, I will be doubly impressed if they assist in the investigation of certain Democrats.

Actually, the translation is the free ride for the GOP low-lifes, like Delay and Cunningham, are over.

That's the translation. Unless, L-188, you approve of the GOP blocking an investigation like this?

While it is good to see that the Dems are sticking to their promises, you claim that the GOP was sweeping things under the rug. If this was fully the case, Cunningham would still have a reputation.

Perhaps you can point out where the GOP cooperated with the investigation. Remember, that Cunningham's problems began over the purchase of his house by a defense contractor. Cunningham plead guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery, mail fraud, wire fraud, and tax evasion, avoiding trial.

The federal investigators are attempting to look at the rest of the story, which the GOP successfully blocked for many months.

Then it is not clear what the rest of the story that the feds are looking at is for. What else are they trying to find?

Yup, shameful. Dispicable. He's in jail too. Best place for him. Shameful conduct.

So why won't that loser Jefferson fro LA do the same . . . oh, wait, almost * everyone down there is guilty . . . he's just leading by example isn't he . . . .

* almost in deference to a few select A-Netters and some Air Force guys I know living there that I know to be upstanding gents/ladies.

Not really sure. The New York Times article did say:

"The subpoenas are also freighted with Constitutional issues, pitting an executive branch investigation against Congress’s claims of immunity and confidentiality for its official business."

Sounds tasty!  stirthepot

Cunningham, bless his little corrupt soul, plead guilty and then became "uncooperative" after striking a plea deal. Jefferson hasn't admitted to anything yet, so justice will have to take its course. I hope the pressure on him from within the party is harsh, and they fully cooperate with any investigation. But ya know, despite the allegations, he was still re-elected, and I just won't go there ...  Wink
