OK I don't really HATE the pictures of the approaches and the beach at SXM.. I could NEVER get sick of them and I love looking and them and videos too.

I am just sick of looking at them and wondering why I haven't ever gone. These pictures make me jealous every time I see them!!! I think I may have to go this year very soon. Just take the plunge, get on a big ol' plane and fly down for a week. These pics are just pissing me off hahaha.

Anyone else who hasn't been to SXM feel this way????

I've thought about it too. But then I get more practical and wonder WHAT ELSE there is to do there besides sit on that beach. For those of you that have been there, what have you done besides look at the airplanes?

I went to St. Maarten before I even knew about the hullabaloo about Maho Beach, and believe me, there's a lot more to the island than just standing there under the flight path. Perhaps because I grew up being able to plane-watch from the frontage road next to the 1's at SFO, that while fun, SXM wasn't something I had to do before dying.

Go if you want to go, but there are only a few bursts of activity each day that's worthwhile, and not something you'd want to spend an entire week doing unless you're totally absorbed with it.

Check out the various travel web sites on SXM. For starters www.stmartin.com. Speaking from experience there enough to keep one busy.

Oh yeah....and I'm one who has NO desire (usually) to go on holliday to one of the islands to our south. (Why bother?)

For me it gets more and more boring to look at the Pic's taken at SXM, as the bulk of the photos are showing a/c at the very same angle: The picture is taken from the beach; the a/c is approaching low from the left.

Any unusal shots are a relieve !

Here is a question.

Does St. Maarten have the same rules and laws as Amsterdam since it is the Dutch-Netherlands? Should I even be asking this? Not that me and my girlfriend would do anything dumb, I am just curious to see what the differences between Amsterdam and St. Maarten is other than the climates and geographical locations.

Nope, would be nice to drop by SXM but there are much more beautifull places waiting.

Part of the Island is French.
So you have to ask yourself, do you feel lucky?

Happiness is not seeing another trite Ste. Maarten photo all week long.

I went there with a group of friends, one of which had a four suites at a timeshare on Simpson Bay where we stayed.

We spent our time going into Marigot (on the French side w/o the cruise ship traffic of Phillipsburg), up to La Samanna/Cupecoy Beach, took a boat ride up to Grand Case to go snorkeling, visited Orient Beach, gambled at the casinos, had lunch at Leyla's on the beach (named for the song), etc. We even went to a timeshare presentation to get a huge discount on one of the rental cars we had for the week.  Wink

Lots to do there. It's an interesting island that has more to offer than the airport.

It's also an entirely duty-free island, so shopping was quite cheap.

I can tell from all the pics that I've seen that there's a nice looking hotel and golf course near the airport. Anyone know the prices on those joints?

We are looking into about $1500 Canadian all inclusive after taaxes to stay at the maho beach hotel right on the beach there right near the airport. I heard that hotel was the nicest on the island dutch side.

Come to YYZ, we have rwy 23, it's the SXM of the north.  smile

Every time I see these pictures, I feel the urge to just hop on a plane and go. Going to SXM is definitely on my list of places to visit (maybe more than once) before I die.

Is there any life at the beacj at the end of the runway, i.e. for snorkeling?

And talking of beaches at the end of runways.... Lanzarote must be very similar to St Maarten! There's a beach at the end of the runway as well as along most of the length of the runway!! Surely this would make a great place to spot and relax!

EDIT... Picture proof

Ok Ok, no where near as good as St Maartens, but still it's a beach none the less  Silly.

Oh I've been to that Wendy's more times than I can count. It's not that far of a drive from Hamilton. But there is nothing like sitting on a beach drinking beer and watching the jets come in!!

I believe the strech of beach along the runway is a nude beach, not sure tho.

I have not made it to SXM yet but I doubt it can beat MLE. Sure, there are not as many heavies but it's something special. I loved living there.

I've seen topless occasionally, not nude. Cupecoy and Orient are the nude beaches.
