Five face charges over burnout gathering
Five men face criminal charges after a crowd turned on police during an illegal burnout gathering in Melbourne's south east on Friday night.

Shops were trashed and police pelted with rocks and bottles as they attempted to seize cars involved in the event on the corner of The Princes Highway and Elonera Road, Noble Park shortly after 1am.

A crowd of 1,000, some with babies in prams, had turned out to watch the illegal race.

Attempts to cordon off the area were obstructed as trouble spots flared, forcing police to retreat up the street.

Fifty extra police and the dog squad were called in to control the situation.

Five men, aged between 20 and 32, were arrested and released but are expected to be charged with traffic and criminal offences.

Five cars were seized under Victoria's new hoon legislation.

Senior police said it was disappointing to see so many people at an illegal event.

"It's very alarming," Superintendent Gavin Barry told ABC Radio.

"These situation are usually spasmodic, spontaneous, but these people were obviously from all over Melbourne."

No one was injured during the incident.

Inquiries are continuing and police have asked anyone with any information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Fools, they also trashed a Blockbuster store in the process. Even worse, some of them had kids with them. I dare say anyone with a even a slightly modified car will be getting some extra police attention at the moment...........

I've seen videos of Arabs (not really sure which country) who really act foolish, crashing into cars, people, etc. Not one time were did the police show up, unless they were really slow in coming.

simple solution, bring out the high powered water canon and that'll rid the street of the spectators, turn it on the cars and they'll piss off pretty quick. then send the bill to the parents!

only way to make them learn is to hit the parents up for the bill! pretty disgusting though, now they'll whinge about no place to rent dvd's, personally i hope everyone of them totals their car and ends up with life long injuries, better them then innocent road users, that may sound harsh but in 2000 i was the victim of one of these high powered drag races...V8 SS commodorre came round a bend and missed the lights and slammed into me from behind, ended up being T.boned and having numerous head, spinal & internal operations, cost me 2 years of my life!

Not sure about the billing the parents part, but I'd love to see a water cannon being used on the 'fully sick' crowd, the arrogant wankers that they are. There are now 'anti-hoon' laws here in Victoria, where the cops can sieze cars being used for said acts. Apparently that's what sparked the riot, cops went in a took a few cars......

we've got them here in the west, cops take your car, then your MDL get's pulled for 6 months, if you get caught again you cop a fairly large fine, if you still don't learn the govt forfeits your car and your MDL cancelled and returned at the courts discretion, which is a polite way of saying you'll need public transport for 5 years or more. these fucken cxnt$ took away the life i knew and i get really pissed off when i see this shit.

worse thing over here is that they do it more by day when its busy.

I've noticed a lot more of it here in Melbourne as well. Hopefully the cops will start getting more hardcore on them now.

I've done many police observer shifts with some of my police mates, and one accident I've attended, I remember very well. I was busy re-packing the Patrol cars boot after spending several hours doing random breath-testing over a busy holiday period. The traffic car I was in, was called to an MVA late one night in a 50km/h zone, so I had to quickly throw the rest of the gear into the boot and jump into the front seat and off we went with the sirens going. When we arrived at the scene about 5 minutes later.....wow what a mess. As we were the first emergency services vehicle to arrive, we got the worst jobs that happens at an accident scene......checking the victims injurys so the responding ambos (Ambulance/s) know what they are dealing with. One vehicle involved was a boy racer with his mum and little sister in the vehicle. This vehicle failed to take a bend and slammed into a parked 4WD. The boy racers vehicle was shunted backwards and onto the footpath on the other side of the road. While en-route to the accident, I was warned that this could be serious. Even thou it was a bad smash, all three people in the speeding vehicle had only minor injurys, with the girl receiving the worst injurys (arm injury). The boy racers vehicle was a total mess and required a tow. I ended up completing paper work because of the accident, and describing what I saw when we arrived. The person was charged with careless use of a motor vehicle, causing injury. Now everytime I see boy racers being stopped by the police, I always have a laugh cause the police have just stopped their 'fun'

This topic is a simple reminder of how dangerous a police officers job is and is a simple reminder of why police officers need to protect themselfs. It always surprises me when police officers are given more weapons to protect themselfs with and members of the public cry foul over it. I know, from first hand experience how dangerous the job is, and I always support the police getting new weapons to use to protect themselfs with.
