I will be spending the weekend in Bali and would like to know what would be the best place to stay. I am looking at either a nice & clean hostel close to the beach or a cheap beach bungalow (preferably).
Most websites advertise high end hotel chains, hence I haven't booked online.
Also, should I book in advance or will I be safe if I arrive there without a reservation?

You'll be safe without a reservation.
Best once you arrive there, just go to the places and ask. The cheap bungalows always have some free places, and the hotel resorts might give you a significant reduction this time of the year.
Since you'll only be there for one weekend, best don't go too far off from Denpasar, since transport is tiring, unorganized and slow. The beaches at the west coast (Kuta, Legian) are touristy, but during off-season not very different from most of the rest of the island, I found.
Hope you enjoy it! I found Bali as a whole rather dreary, but most visitors would probably disagree with me, so there must be something to it.
