The other day I was having lunch with my best friend from middle school, celebrating the fact that she's pregnant (God, do I feel old now...  old  ). When I asked her about her plans for the future, she told me that she and her boyfriend were looking to move out to a place of their own soon, but they're not planning to get married. The reason, as she said, is that their company's policy forbids married couples to work together, so if they were to get married, one of them would have to resign.

I don't recall this being an issue in the companies where I've worked; in fact, in one of them I had a colleague that fell madly in love with one of the guys at the El Salvador office. Big grin They kept a long-distance relationship for about a year, spending vast amounts of money on phone calls and visiting each other at least once a month, until he managed to be transferred to the Guatemala office. Now they're happily married, and still working together.

So, I'm wondering, is this no-married-couples policy a common thing? How is it in your workplace?

It's my own company, and I work partly at home. God knows I've tried to persuade the missus to go, but the awkward cow just won't take the hint...  

On a serious note, I can't imagine such a policy being legal here.

In the US, they're referred to Nepotism policies, and while a few are that strict, most simply say two people related by marriage or blood can't work in the same reporting structure or in the same department/division/group. I think they were much more common back in the 60s and 70s when women were first coming into the work force and companies were afraid of the unknown territory of spouses working together.

Large US typically won't allow married couples to work for each other but they can work for the same company. I have known several that do.

As for not getting married, most companies also don't want people in initimate relationships working for each other. As they are having a baby together, they clearly have that type of relationship. In the US, most large companies would find him or her a job in a different part of the company.

In a Swiss private company such a policy would be illegal. It might be in place for some government agencies and in politics where there could be an interest conflict.

DL enforces that rule STRICTLY.... this includes any family member, not just married couples.

Walmart got slammed in Germany last year for trying to enforce this sort of policy in their German stores (or some other chain that they own). I think it's unnecessary, married couples should be allowed to work in the same place as long as they can keep work and play separate.

In some cases, the rules may apply to certain departments. You wouldn't want someone in the corporate security department fraternizing with someone in another department in the company.

Well, strangely enough, in the multinational non-profit organization where I work, if a direct family member works in the same organization, you can't be hired. But not more than that.
This law applies to all duty stations including the US, Austria, Switzerland etc etc.

There are legitimate cases where its a concern, corporate security and finance being a couple of them. I think it really comes down to is there a true business need vs. is it simply a policy instituted because some  old  got the willies thinking about mommy & daddy getting chummy in the workplace.  Wink

Within the NHS here in the UK, it is OK for married couples to work within the same Department. We recently had a Nurse who was, (still is !) married to the Anaesthetic Technician within my Unit - Both working side by side. It's unusual within the same ward/Dept, but it happens...No law here to prohibit this.

It's the same where I work - there a lots of couples & families (both parents & 1 or 2 sons/daughters) that work there. The general policy is that they can't be in the same team, i.e. direct report. However, because our sites are spread out within the country & there are multiple sites in most major cities, they may work at different offices.

I'm with you there, the reason we have been married 24 years is because Mrs Jafa doesn't work alongside me, there would be bloodshed...we do things in very different ways and of course....mine is the wrong way!!  Wink

So in order to avoid an accidental "working spouses" scenario Mrs J chooses not to work at all....so many lunch dates, so little time.... Smile
