Hey everyone..

I'm getting ready to move to Dade County, Florida for college.. I'm going to be attending Miami-Dade College and Miami International University for Fashion and Design.. Most of my time will be spent at MDC's Homestead campus, so I figured I would get an apartment there, as I've heard traffic between Miami and Homestead is horrible. I understand Homestead was one of the hardest hit areas during Hurricane Andrew, and that most of the town was devastated, and has since seen a bit of a population surge, but does anyone know anything about Homestead other than that? Is it a safe area? (Safe enough for me to get lost once in a while and not fear for my life) Any suggestions for where to find an apartment, if not in Homestead?

I googled for about an hour, but all I can find are message boards where people fight about local issues I know nothing about.. I'll be visiting a few times before actually moving, to finalize everything, but I would really like all the input I can get..

Thanks!!!

Josh

I don't want to rain on your parade, but the one time I've been there in the last ten years, it was post-Hurricane (Andrew I think) in the late 1990s. I was thoroughly unimpressed. It's a wide spot in the road now, after the Hurricane. The Air Force kept that town alive until the Hurrican blew in, and devastated the entire area. The Air Force did not rebuild. There are some active military units at Homestead AFB, and some new construction, but you drive through the base and there are blown out buildings with trees growing through them.

The city of Homestead wasn't much better. No devastation like I saw on the AFB, but there was really - nothing - to be impressed about. Nothing.

The good part - you're not in Miami. The other good part - you're about a spit in the wind from the Florida Keys.

Homestead sucks...at least it isn't Liberty City though.

You can always hit the keys for the beach thing...or Miami Beach if you want to surf a little.
You could do better in Miami...but you could do a whole helluva lot worse too.

Nothingness is fine, as long as I don't get mugged, shot, and raped, all on the way to class. I just really don't want to end up with a 1 year lease on a place that I'm going to be scared to leave on a daily basis.. I've been to Ft. Lauderdale over 10 times, but never ventured south of the Broward county line, and now I'm kinda kicking myself in the ass for it.

I obviously can't afford the rent to stay in a high-rise in South Beach, but if I'd be better off somewhere farther north, and commuting to school, I guess thats fine... I currently drive 50 miles each way to work everyday, so I don't have a problem with long drives.

Its safe. And I wouldn't want to commute into Homestead all the way from Broward. That would suck.
If you avoid areas like Liberty City, which by living in Homestead you will, you'll be ok.

LOL, there is soo little diference...You still have to speak Spanish most days.

I honestly don't reccomend S. Florida for anyone unless your really comfortable with your command of Spanish and a latin crowd. Yeah, running off to the keys is a great release, but it does cost a bit of gas to get there.

Why not the Art Institue in Chicago?

The Homestead area has grown, in orders of magnitude. The place was rebuilt and is OK now. Traffic depends on the time you drive. It's not that bad a place. It is a bit more laid back than Miami. As noted above, it has its good areas and bad areas. The place is loaded with migrant workers.

Well, I considered that, as well as the International Academy of Design Technology in Chicago, but no matter what I had my heart set on Miami-Dade College for the ATC program, and if I could get the Retail degree in the same area, then it would be even better...
