All You Train Nuts - The Paris RER Line C

Hey guys

Back in 2001/2002 my family and I were living in France because of my dad's job. We were over there for 9 months. I was 11 and 12 while we were over there, and found the Paris RER to be fascinating. We lived 2 blocks from a Line C station. I remember the really old, metal trains that looked like a tin can... really annoying old things... horrible seats, no air conditioner, etc. If I remember correctly, the train ID names that usually had those old trains were Vick, Cine, and Jill (?).

Then there were some newer, two story trains, but with the same orange seats as the old tin can trains. Then a newer version of that, with some sort of un-cushioned black seats (they were rare trains). And, the creme of the crop, with some nice red padded red chairs, black arm rests, etc. In the 9 months we were there, I think I only rode on the nicest trains maybe 4 or 5 times. Mostly we got the oldest 2 story trains. And we rode the train every other day, at least, while going into paris and back.

I was really interested in them (ok, obsessed) as a kid (ok, as a younger kid  Wink.) I was wondering they still have those old clunker trains, and how many of the newer trains they have? I think the newest ones had a green leaf with a "transalien" (sp?) name on them. LED lights, very nice.

The few times I rode on the other lines (Lines A, B and D), they seemed to be worse trains. Did C get the nicest ones, since the line is the tourist line? Or could some of the 2 story trains not work on the lines??

If anybody has any links to SNCF RER history or anything, I'd love to look at the page! I'm hoping somebody here knows at least a little bit of info... I just keep thinking about the trains and how fun they were. Too bad we don't have that kind of quality transportation here in the USA.

This is my understanding about drivers in general - they usually stick to one line, and in most cities, lines are stock specific - you'll usually only see one type of stock on a line (this isn't always the case, such as Berlin, but usually is). Therefore, they usually only know how to operate one type, and stick to it. Different stocks definitely have enough different things about them that you wouldn't be able to hop from one type to another like they were autos.

Not sure how it works in France exactly, but from what I hear from Belgian train drivers, special training is needed for every type, though not every driver will have been trained for every type. Drivers are divided into 'series'. Each of those series has a specific number of services they need to run. Each driver in that series will be trained for each one of the different types of equipment used on the services they need to do.

The line C RER had different types of trains per route sometimes... for instance the "Cine" line, which was "Jill" in the opposite direction, usually had the tin can train, but sometimes had the newer train that you see in the 1st reply pictures. Train scheduling, for some reason, fascinates me... I'd love to find some train site that explains the whole structure.

Historically, especially since the old Sprague stock began to be replaced in the 1950s, many Paris Metro and RER lines have not been stock-specific, because older rolling stock has been mixed with newer--a situation sometimes continuing for decades before the older stock is replaced. Today, most metro lines are more consistently stocked (though this will change again as the aging MF67 trains begin to be replaced), but the RER lines are still relatively mixed. I don't know how the driver training works for this though...

Anyway, I liked these old beauties, the 1938 "Z" stock on the RER B (built back when it was still the "Ligne de Seaux.")

The last one is what they looked like inside when I rode them as a kid. Made an awesome accelerating noise.

Then does that mean I can learn to drive that train and then fly a CRJ? Easy way to learn to fly.

But then - I won't ever fly in a CRJ again, because some of those train drivers weren't too... uhh... well... it was just unpleasant riding with them.

Those are the MS61 trains, pretty much the oldest trains still operating on the metro or RER network. In the last few months, they've started renovating them inside and out. They'll look like this soon...
