Hi

I'm about to do some film work and the company I work with will provide me with some HD movie data I will work with. They speak about sending me a Harddrive with one single 200GB file.

My question now is ... is this possible? Can such a large file be actually handled propperly? Ain't there a maximum file size per file system?

I'm working on a Mac Pro with Firewire 800 and USB 2.0, the HD HAS to be mounted as extern ... if this does matter

Klaus might be able to help  Smile

Thanks a lot!

Depends what filesystem they use:

HFS (apples filesystem) - 2GB filesize limit
HFS+ (replaces above) - 16 Exabyte filesize limit

NTFS (Windows 2K/XP/Vista) - 16 Exabyte filesize limit

FAT32 - 4GB limit

Ext2/3 (Linux) - 16GB to 2TB (dependant on other things).

As Richard said it shouldn't be a problem.

Just make sure both sides are entirely clear about the file system and the file format to be used. If there are to be problems, they'll most probably arise there (even if the disk itself is defect-free - it should be tested thoroughly and there should be enough time to ship another copy if it should turn out to be damaged).

The machine itself should be fine for the job. You can't get much higher than that - at least until the 8-core models start shipping...!  mischievous

I know ... that's why I bought it  Wink

The other company seems to use NTFS ... seems to be not that big an issue.

If they send you the file on an NTFS formatted disk, you will be able to read it but you wont be able to write it back to the disk. OSX doesnt currently support NTFS writing.

If you have Windows installed under BootCamp, you can of course write to it as well, but if the other side is capable of reading HFS+, you might just as well reformat the disk as HFS+ and copy to it directly.

The other company announced in 2003 it was supposed to start using a more advanced file system; WinFS, with its newest product. However, as usual, looks came first and WinFS was not included in the other company's newest product.

I think he just meant the originator of those HD data, not the Realm of Evil™...

I apologize if my 'stupidity' is taking this thread off topic a little...but Klaus, I think you are a psychic. In my opinion, a few commercials have been good, but not great  frown
