I woke up this morning and walked to my computer which was off. I have an iBook G4. I was surprised to see hear that the fan was running, the hard disk was warm, and the computer couldn't turn on. I took the battery out, put it back in, and it started up normally. what gives?

That sounds odd indeed.

- Did you actually shut it down or did you put it to sleep before?

- Had it been closed or open?

- Were FireWire or USB devices connected?

You could also look into the Console and System log files to check what was going on (use the Console utility to check - easily opened through Spotlight).

Perhaps SantaKlaus payed you a visit. Instead of presents he uses MACs from all over the world.

Sorry. Hope you get the problem sorted out. Big grin

There is a known issue with power management systems across various Mac laptops which cause the situation you describe, normally its intermittant and non reoccuring so I wouldnt worry too much unless it happens again.

A good thing to do is to ensure you are on the latest firmware versions for your Mac.

no... both the open sleigh and the chimneys are too inconvenient for my taste... The internet is much more practical for supporting purposes.

It should be noted at this point that I offered Klaus the use of a 757 this morning, but he humbly turned it down.  Wink

Now Klaus, you have to tell the truth.

You wrote a script that scans every minute the a.net forums for keywords like "mac", "apple", "ipod", "iphone", "microsoft", ecc. and sends you an alert via SMS, right? Big grin

What, SantaKlaus doesn't use an iPod?

Well, parking space, fuel expenses and CO2 output certainly played a role in that...!

No. Just garden variety intuition.

What gives you that idea? Sure I do!

Most probably the security latch (the one that keepd the Mac closed did not engage so it did not enter sleep mode and the CPU and Hd kept working. Since the Laptop cools itself a lot by the metal on the top and the keyboard, it heated and the Mini fan turned on to keep things in control.

Check that it doesnt happen again, My Ibook G4 had the sam issue because I droped it and became a little off center but that bump kept the switch on the latch out of ceter and did not close properly....
If you have applecare theyll fix it in 24 hours...
