I'm looking to replace my vintage 2003 iPod and I'm wondering if something new is coming out soon or should I just drop the $250 and get the current 30GB iPod now. Anybody in the know? I don't believe in the whole "convergence theory" so I won't be making any phone calls or taking any pictures with my MP3 player any time soon.

Do you need a new iPod at the present time?

If yes, then get one.

If no, wait for the next generation. This handy Buyer's Guide puts it in the middle of its product cycle, with 152 days since an update out of an average of 223.

I would go with the current version of the iPods if $$$ is an issue. Prices have come down and you konw the new models will cost more than the current models.

Any reason why it has to be an Ipod?

The only thing I've ever found of value to wait for is an upcoming new technology, like when the Macs went to the PowerPC chip, or brought out the G4, for instance. Another example would have been the Intel Macs and the new, improved chip which came out after a few months of introduction.

We already know the next advancement in iPods will be the iPhone, so if there isn't anything you'll likely use on it, the only thing you'll sacrifice by buying now vs. some months from now may be a small price or storage difference. In the meantime, you'll have lost the fun and ability to use the things in a 2007 vs. 2003 model.

Seriously, if you want the latest technology and can pay for it, I'd wait.

Supposedly, the next generation iPod is to have true widescreen capabilities, but I am not sure when it is due.

Do a Google search for possible new models and see if they have any dates that you can live with. If not then just get a new one now. I did some searching and didn't find anything concrete back in August when I was lookign and dammit if the 80GB model came out a month later after I bought my 60GB one. But in the end no big deal.

As for the convergence aspect of things...I work in that field and I think it can be a lot of vaporware and hot air. While I may have to carry multiple devices I prefer to have ones that can do a good job at one thing versus one device that does a half-assed attempt at all jobs. If anyone can make it work I'll go with Apple but the first generation of it will be lacking in features. Does anyone remember the Apple Newton or the HP handhelds? Wait until second generation or at least the first service pack.

Probably because he has an existing iPod and doesn't want to waste a lot of time converting files or moving them into another player on his PC.

How much does your old iPod store on the player? If it's under 10 GB you should get an 8 GB iPod nano, which is small, doesn't skip even when bumped hard, and stores quite a lot of music if you "rip" your CD collection at 160 kbps data sample rate in either AAC or MP3 encoding.

Or because he like millions others simply prefers it.

My subjective take on this would be that it's unlikely that Apple would steal the thunder from its own iPhone introduction a few months away by introducing comparable technology in iPod form. I just don't see them doing that.

The 5G iPod has been refreshed and updated not too long ago, so I'd expect at least a few months of the iPhone being on sale before something dramatic happens to the iPod range.

Could be wrong - but that's what the crystal ball says.

Til then - get a big one if it won't have to survive a lot of physical movement and you need video or lots of space, get a nano otherwise and if you're exclusively listening in shuffle mode anyway the shuffle may suffice.

Pretty neat! I always found the downside of swimming vs. running is the lack of music! Does this thing work? Price?

I think the correct sentence for most is: "He prefers it because he wants to be like millions of others"  Wink

The return rate of newly acquired Zunes wouldn't be quite as high if it was just that, don't you think?  mischievous

I'm already hooked on the iCrack and iTunes, and my vintage iPod from 2003 has served me well and I see no reason to switch.

Widescreen capabilities? What is that? I don't watch TV and I really only watch movies when I'm strapped in an airline seat facing the screen.

My apologies, I thought you wanted to go video iPod. Anyways, widescreen is a type of video format that as the name implies, is wider, but I agree with you on the TV, in that I rarely watch it too.

I'm confused...is the actual iPod screen bigger or is it just a format change like letterbox (or whatever it's called)?

The iPhone will have a much larger screen with higher resolution, so the thought is that Apple might one day move the iPod line to a similar format as well.

The iPhone screen also has a somewhat more stretched format when held in landscape position, so it should be better for widescreen movie formats as far as it goes.
