I simply put the hold switch on while I was on the train and then later when I got out the thing simply did not start. I tried moving the switch back and forth and holding the button down for 6 seconds. When I plugged it into my usb port, it refused to start at all ! Has anybody ever had this problem and do you know how much it will cost me to fix this ???

Thanks in advance

Hold the center button and the "up" button at the same time for a while, that should reset the iPod.

Indeed - holding both the center button and "menu" for a few seconds is the reset combination. Does it come up again after that?

Uninstall iTunes on your computer and then reinstall it. should work then.
Same thing happened to me today actually.

If the iPod doesn't wake up, installing new software on the computer can't help him.

It's a last resort which is rarely necessary anyway. What had your problem been?

Problems with iPods are not more frequent in relation to their total number than with other players - there are just many more iPods than Creative players (about five to ten times as many), so it's to be expected that you'll hear of problems a bit more often as well.

On the other hand, Apple's user support is quite good. If a reset doesn't help, I'd recommend Alberchico to simply call Apple and ask for help.

That doesn't explain, however, why users of a majority software platform are battling with a much larger number of problems each one individually than the individual users of another platform, while it's not evident that iPod users had any more problems than users of other players - if that!  mischievous

It wouldn't wake up...even when I plugged it into the computer.
So I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes.
All my songs carried over too,and then the iPod woke up.

It's almost certainly a "voodoo" effect - it would have woken up in any case at that point. Before it has already woken up it doesn't even recognize which software is installed on the computer.

A reset with the combination above would almost certainly have helped in that case, too.
