Not an "Inside the Newsroom" piece, but just a view of news observation from this week.
John McCain is in Iowa today. And is, impressively, making three stops. Such a travel schedule. He's hosting Town-Hall style meetings ... which I might add are available on his website for your viewing pleasure today.
While he's yet to announce an "official run," I will say he's hired an official Campaign Manager in Iowa. You draw your own conclusions.
The mood of the crowd was ... surprisingly subdued. Not to start a debate, just stating the way it is, it was mostly an older crowd that was there going through the motions of hearing another speech. Speaking with some of them it was very mixed on his support of a troop increase to Iraq, but they are very much in favor of a Republican candidate that is very fiscal and very moderate leaning ... unlike a Tommy Thompson or a Sam Brownback, etc. While there was applause... response (who really doesn't at a political rally that's mostly invite with your party's biggest local activists ? ) it is interesting to note he still didn't receive a full standing ovation when he came out) some did seem a bit disappointed in that "nothing new or bold" was declared. It was just the same ole same ole but just hearing it in person. A few people fell asleep while sitting through the opening 4 or 5 speakers (there might have been more, I lost count) that they had to go through before he came out.
I am sure that I will get some more one on one time with McCain in the near future ... I'd certainly like to as he stands out as a Republican candidate that I would sit and listen to. It would be interesting to hear him in Republican forums talking issues with Brownback, Thompson, Romney, and especially Giuliani and Gingrich.
But a bit of advice for him ... next time you're in town having meetings at 9am ... cut out the opening acts.
The city police department here lost the first officer "in the line of duty" in almost 30 years. It was last Sunday morning when a 10 year veteran set off for the airport to fly out that morning for weapons training ... when he swerved to avoid a deer, rolled down an embankment and then died from his injuries. At first, it seemed a "pretty gray area" -- at least to me -- some others would disagree I am sure -- about whether or not he was truly on duty or not. But the ruling came down that it was indeed "work related" ... I've no problem with that ... that way full benefits are awarded.
This is the third police funeral that I've gone to. And it really truly is an amazing sight to see. Police officers from across the midwest came in full uniform to pay respects to one of their colleagues. It was said about 800 officers came out ... I'd place good money that it was more than that. The sea of blue from the officers ... plus those that came that are members of fire departments, ems response teams, and even air medical units flew overhead in tribute. It's one of those visually stunning moments where "pictures are worth a thousand words" does injustice. You have to see it to believe it.
And now Twiggy.
Some of you might know Twiggy ... or might not know Twiggy. Twiggy is the world famous water skiing squirrel. The current Twiggy is the 6th one in a line of skiing squirrels that's been at it for the past 27 years. Twiggy is also known as the "ultimate kicker" in tv news. And we ate it up at 5, 6, and 10.
Twiggy is appearing at the Sportshow this weekend. This is "his" 12th appearance there. I've seen Twiggy on tv many times before. I went yesterday. I must say ... I was truly fascinated by watching this squirrel. So sadly fascinated, in fact, that I showed up for all four of his show times.
I think more people were there for the squirrel than were at McCain....
Twiggy in '08?
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport
