Good for him! I read Gen. Hal Moore's book and saw the movie as well. Unfortunately the movie's ending was hokey.

Another Vietnam war soldier whose heroism was finally recognized was WO Hugh Thompson. See story below...

My Lai massacre hero dies at 62

Hugh Thompson Jnr, a former US military helicopter pilot who helped stop one of the most infamous massacres of the Vietnam War has died, aged 62.

He put his helicopter down between the soldiers and villagers, ordering his men to shoot their fellow Americans if they attacked the civilians.

MSNBC a little slow; this story was in the Phoenix papers last week as Maj. Crandall spends his winters in the valley of the sun. Well deserved award I might say.  bigthumbsup

Confuscius thanks for the link. I was unaware of Thompson's actions. After reading the story I have to say that he is also a real hero in my book.

There are hundreds of unsung heroes out there.

My salute to this soldier amongst soldiers. If he did only half of what was depicted in Gen Moore's book, and subsequently, in the movie, he deserves it without question.

Salute, Major.

Question, he says he received the dfc in country, then it was upgraded to a dsc later on, now it is upgraded again to the MOH. Does that mean he loses the dfc and dsc or do they just award the MOH for other specific actions during the battle?

Generally yes.

You can't be awarded multiple decorations for the same act/actions.

Must be one of the few places the government doesn't allow double dipping!

Absolutely, one of the first conditions to recieve a medal is that somebody has to see you do it.

Second is that they have to live to tell about it.
