Hi,
I'm, using a MacPro and just got sent a HD with Files. I tried mounting it but the Drive failed to be recognised. All I see is the usual size, format .... now the word "Windows LDM" cought my attention as this is where usually NTFS (on interchange disks I use with PD users) stands.
Now, what is this LDM Disk format? How can I handle it??
My first try will by mount the external drive to a friends Windows XP computer and copy it on another NTFS drive.... will this work or is LDM some fancy new Vista thing?
Can WinXP read LDM drives??
Any help is highly appreciated!

"Windows LDM" means that it's an NTFS dynamic disk. As you can't open it on your MacPro, probably OS X can't handle Windows dynamic disks, although I never tried. Your friend's XP will handle it fine.

Now is this a great side or what .... All wikis, forums, etc couldn't help me ... 5 minutes in A.net will do the Trick!
Thanks Manuel, however I tried plugging the HD to an XP PC but that one won't even recognise the disk. It's shown in the hardware preferences, but not in the Explorer window (Like F:/ ...)
Maybe it's for Win2000 only?

Sounds like the MBR of the disk might be damaged, there is a utility run from the CD of WinXP called FIXMBR, might be worth giving it a whirl on that disk, maybe it can recover it. Otherwise... sorry to say... toasted hard disk anyone?

Yeah, but as I was told LDM does not has an MBR at all but handles files totally different ...

Try going to My Computer (right click) -> Manage -> Storage -> Disk management. How does the HD show up there? Does it say it's damaged or something? Now be careful, don't create any partitions, just report back what you see in there... maybe we'll find out something useful.

It shows as every other drive und "Laufwerke" / drives and says nothing about it being defective.
Left is the internal drive for reference, the Samsung 300GB version is the one this is all about.
However, I just read that Dynamic drives can not be mounted via USB or other external means ... I try to mount it via the usual internal way (IDE) and HOPE that this is the cause of all.

Whoopa, It works!!
I mounted it internaly on a WinXP Computer I had around here for backup and after it still did not show I blamed it to the disk. However I remembered a tricks from some Windows works few months back and went to something called "Device manager", there the disk showed up perfectly, however with a little yellow exclamation mark sign, I googled and found out it's a small step from here, all I had to do is sort of convert the "foreign" (That's what it was called: "Fremd" in german windows) HD and there she is. Internally she was still mounted to her old system.

Dynamic -> NTFS -> MacOSX
So as we speak the PC is copying the file to another external 300GB Firewire drive .... on the disk is 1 (one) single 200 GB (twohundred Giga) file with a HD Film I need to edit ... wish me luck and good temper
Guess today I broke the 2 Terrabyte storage mark
