If I haven't read Lord of the Rings, will I understand any of the movie?

I have not read the book and enjoyed the movie. You have to think a lot during the movie, but it is good!

There are a few things you will not get in the movie. I suggest you do as I did and find a fellow dorky friend to accompany you to the movie and explain certain things as they come along. But, on the whole, if you have a decent understanding of fantasy novels, you will get the movie. It's absolutely worth seeing whether you read the books or not.

Yes, you will!

However, there are differences between the movie and the book. Some things have been shortened or omitted, others have been emphasized. But on the whole all you need to know is explained in the movie.

If you like the movie you might read the book and find out about the differences and discover the unique world of Tolkien!

Enjoy it!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy It's a great movie and a great book!

of course things have had to be shortened or left out. The depth of the book is such that you can't push it all into a single movie (or one movie per book of the trilogy).

One thing that is a good point that has been brought up on this forum is the ending...

If I didn't know what was happening next, I guess I'd think the ending was very anti-climactic. Indeed, the breaking of the Fellowship at Rauros is one of the slower parts of the book. Amazing, because the action kicks right in in the first pages of Two Towers.

I had only heared bits and pieces about the book, and finished seeing the movie less than an hour ago, It was really good.
