Pipe up, hockey fans. Your thoughts on A) the hit, B) Simon's mother and/or lineage, C) the punishment, D) anything else related. If you haven't seen it, I've posted it below.

IMO, boot him for the season, any post-season and maybe a little of next season. Harsh? I don't think so. Yes, Hollweg was able to leave the ice on his feet and his injury was relatively minor, but Simon's actions were uncalled for. Throw a punch or put him in a headlock if you don't like the hit (which looked clean to me), but to whack him in the jaw with the stick (insert AeroWesty joke here: ____________________!) is just trash.

I fully agree with you. The league needs to crackdown on this type of shit. It still pisses me off that Bertuzzi only ended up with a 17 game suspension, and he ruined a mans career. It pisses me off even more that my Red Wings traded for the bastard. Simon should be suspended for the rest of the year, and the first half of next year. The NHL should not tolerate this sort of behavior at all.
Nice Trip Report!!! Great Pics, thanks for posting!!!! B747Forever

I was at the game last night as I have been at every Islander game this season. It was an interesting setting in the coliseum after it happened. Most fans in my section (Mostly Islander faithful) were shocked...some jackasses on both sides were excited because they thought a fight would ensue. Whatever the case is, Chris Simon should be suspended for the rest of the season (15 Games) and the extent of the Isles playoff games.
I don't feel Simon shoudl be suspended for next season though. This was an unfortunate instaance and this time period should be enough and I will tell you why. The McSorley incident took place with Brashear's back to him. The same with thing with Bertuzzi. Brashear and Moore were blind sided with their incidents. In this situation Hollweg took down Simon, Turned around at Simon and they were facing each other. This was an extreme cheapshot but not like the other two. There is stupidty and then cowardly. The other two were cowardly, this was sheer stupidity.
Yes Hollweg was able to walk out under his own power and probably return if this had happened earlier in the game, but I don't feel that should have an effect on the suspension. You must suspend Simon for however many games regardless of the injury.
The NHL is once again brought into the light for the wrong reason. It is unfortunate that American Media only covers hockey in these scenarios. Kind of awful to hear the local radio show (Mike and the Mad Dog) try to talk hockey when these idiots have no clue. The NHL should lay the suspension down, distance yourself from this type of play and do a much better job of marketing the other aspects of the game.
I am very much looking forward to the rematch on 3/25 and I will be over in my second home of section 339. As much as I think Hollweg is a douche of a player, no one deserves that and I hope the league will do the right thing.

I love the physical aspect of the game, and I love the fights, but this is what gives hockey a bad name sometimes. Nothing like having every major sports news outlet headline with this story all day long.
If I were to dole out the punishment myself I'd kick him out for a year, 365 days, next year this time, he can come back. I would have done the same to Bertuzzi. Simon is damn lucky that the stick wasn't 2 inches lower, that could have crushed Hollweg's throat and killed him right there on the ice. And if I were the Islanders, I'd probably forget about trying to extend his contract.

Quoting A332 (Reply 4): Simon also took a nasty hit from behind... so is anyone really surprised that he lost his cool and took a swing?
The NHL needs to address cheap hits of ALL forms, to let Hollweg off the hook while focusing only on Simon is wrong.
The Hollweg hit on Simon was a clean hit. Simon just didn't see it coming, as he had his head down as he was trying to spot the puck, which was between his skates. The two most important things a hockey player is taught from an early age is to "keep your stick on the ice" and "keep your head up".
If it wasn't for this cheap shot last night, everyone would probably be talking about the pummeling Francis Bouillon of the Habs got at the hands of Keith Tkachuk after Kovalchuk took exception to the knee-on-knee hit Bouillon had on Hossa earlier and started a shoving match and Tkachuk came in to for a little TCB. Racked up 17 minutes in penalties (5 for fighting, 10 minute misconduct and a 2 minute instigator).

Definitely should be suspended for at least the rest of the season +playoffs...Bettman has got to do something to crack down on these cheapshots that seem to be occurring all too often, its only a matter of time before someone really does get killed on the ice by a cheapshot of some sort...

McSorley whacks Brashear...
Jannsen vs Darcy Tucker - Nice name, BTW. Momma Tucker really wanted a girl, huh?
I'm a Leaf fan and not a Tucker fan ( i admit i have him in my pool) he has some issues as well. There is intensity and there is plain insanity almost uncontrollable., so yes, he may be shown the door as well. Didn't Tucker do Peca or was that Domi?... i think it was Domi.

It was that puke Tucker. He submarined Peca that killed the Isles playoff run.
yep.
he got me a few points tonight, lets keep em around for a bit more
note: the Leafs recently signed him to i think a 4 year contract.
hmm. ya Domi did Niedermyer with a sight to the head, another cheap one. I'm glad he's gone. He'a also got some serious personel shit to deal with of late.

Domi did Niedermayer in a few years back. The CO Arena fans were chanting "Domi sucks" late in the third period of Game 7 with the Devils ahead.
As for Simon, definitely suspend him for a long time. Yes, the hit on him was big, but it was clean, and there's no excuse for what he did - none at all. Whatever Bertuzzi got, Simon should get.

Good for him. So how does that justify whacking someone in the face with your stick?

It doesn't. It just goes to show you that Hollweg's hit from behind was not as 'correct' as people seem to think and that the force and nature of the hit caused Simon to snap.
This whole situation is completely over-sensationalized. People are calling for a lifetime ban and stating this is worse than the Bertuzzi fiasco... which is nonsense. There is no comparison between Simon/Hollweg and Bertuzzi/Moore. In the heat of the moment, Simon immediately retaliated for a hit from behind, Bertuzzi planned and executed an attack and waited for his opportunity to take Moore out. Hollweg was back on the ice the very next game with a couple stitches, Steve Moore received a broken neck which ended his NHL career. No comparison.
Suspend Chris Simon for the rest of 2007. Done. Time to move on.

Just like A332 said, it dosen't. Hollweg's hit knocked him to another world and he snapped.
The Suspension came down and it comes out to the rest of the season and playoffs. It also translates into 25 games which means that if the Isles play less then 10 playoff games then the suspension will carry over to the next season.
This means that this is the longest suspension in NHL history. This I feel is to far. Rest of the season and playoffs is fine but it should not carry over to next year. This suspension will effect the team right now, their is no reason to hurt the team next year.
