Is De-escalation Possible?

Contention amongst people is nothing new at all. People have been fighting about shit for 1000's of years, and likely will for a few thousand more. The thing is that when the literal fighting is not going on there seemed to be (in years past) if nothing else the allusion of a civil tone in disagreements. People could agree to disagree and could make arguments/counters without an aura of personal disrespect. Now it seems that you can't even talk about something as stupid as computers without it becomming a MS V Mac Flamefest, talk about commercial aircraft without and A V B war, or Politics being Conservative V Liberal. I know I'm as guilty as others, but I'd like to be among the first to say WTF are we thinking? We are we SO passionate about issues that we argue our beliefs to the detriment of other people and 'civilized' society? Do you think we can collectively take our heads out of our asses and when someone posts something you disagree with just reply with I disagree because of credible source a,b, and c and leave it at that? Then if there is disagreement rebut with your sides credible sources and not flame the user who respectfully disagreed?

If you start a thread about a WIndows issue, someone will mention alternatives to it. Same thing as with cars, if you posted a thread on how your car (e.g. a Chrysler) let you down you'd definitely get a few replies telling you to get a car from a different maker. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

As the only true non-geekish alternative to Windows is Mac OS, that's what people will hint at. If that's too much for someone, well, they should just read over the posts in question.

No flamefest in this thread, which you're obviously referring to: Vista Upgrade Disaster. (by TedTAce Mar 8 2007 in Non Aviation) The first one to make it personal was WellHung, and then later on someone else said, "You all suck." I wonder how that was supposed to calm people down... as for myself, it made me chuckle.

"WTF are we thinking (having) our heads (in) our asses"? Perhaps you might re-think your language, sir, because there is a lot in it that might be inefficient at keeping things civil. If I was asked "what the fuck are you thinking" (to drop the linguistic fig leaf) I'd certainly not reply in the most polite of my ways... just my  twocents .

That happens all the time, mostly when people with thick(ish) skins who have no need to be right 100% of the time discuss. You can witness it right here in this forum.

As the exception.

Expressions like WTF are not offensive per say, unless they are directed at someone in particular to make them look ignorant. That's part why why I had the "WE" in there. As in I think WE all need to come to our senses. But what do I know Almost 8 hours, 60 views and one reply later it's pretty obvious to me that the status quo is acceptable. Thanks for the civil reply though Aloges.

It's a tricky thing... I'd compare them to "crop dusting" on a plane, not meant to offend anyone personally but they make for a worse atmosphere. There are a few things I avoid like the plague unless I really mean to "raise my voice" online, including swear words, CAPS and smilies indicating bad tempers. I certainly don't mean to lecture anyone - just trying to explain what's served me rather well in here.
