This thread is not intended to offend my fellow German A.netters in any way!

If you are on holidays and you see tourists wearing sandals with socks, you can be 99% sure they are German!
Have you ever noticed this fashion. Would any of out fellow German a.netter be able to explain this? I find it actually quite funny !!

I don't know about the Germans! But I wear socks with sandals all summer. And yes I receive my fair amount of jostling due to it.

My 3 reasons for the socks.

Reason 1, my feet stay clean.
Reason 2, in the summer evening it can still get rather chilly and the socks allows be to wear the sandals all day and all night without losing the feelings in my toes.
Reason 3, ( and this is what I get teased for the most) I actually like the way it looks!

I am like 1/5 German or something like that??? Who knows!

Cheers!

I wouldn't do it and I'm German... At least not when I'm wearing shorts, which I only do while driving my bike or at the beach. So I can't answer your question. But yes, there are quite a few German men who do that.

Such a thing exists? I think I would rather chop off my feet than have to wear sandals of any kind.

I'm right with you there, God they are so uncomfortable (childhood flashback), stones and sand get in them, the sun burns your feet... never mind the fact that they look so fucking stupid, with or without socks.

I'm afraid that many Brits also suffer from the same fashion "sense".

I love wearing sandals in the summer (or all year here in Dubai). I hate having hot feet.

[edited to add] I never wear socks with sandals.

Birds of a feather....

One does it, then they all do it. Monkey see, monkey do. That and it's comfortable. Maybe to Germans, it's cool. Who is to say...

I have been known to wear white ankle socks and black crocs (I just don't care). I also wear blundstones with footy (Parramatta colors at that) and rugby socks (again, I just don't care).

It does help when you play spot the tourist in Cape Town in December  Smile Nothing against Germans, I have many German friends but they are pretty distinctive on tour. Similarly, the English tourists with their sunburned lobster skin or pasty white legs, England football shirt tucked in the waistband of their black shorts, and trainers without socks are just as easily identifed.

"What's the pointof going abroad if you're just another tourist carted around in buses surrounded by sweaty mindless oafs from Kettering and Coventry in their cloth caps and their cardigans and their transistor radios and their Sunday Mirrors, complaining about the tea - "Oh they don't make it properly here, do they, not like at home" - and stopping at Majorcan bodegas selling fish and chips and Watney's Red Barrel and calamares and two veg and sitting in their cotton frocks squirting Timothy White's suncream all over their puffy raw swollen purulent flesh 'cos they "overdid it on the first day."

"...and you get cornered by some drunken greengrocer from Luton with an Instamatic camera and Dr. Scholl sandals..."

31 Post contains images A332 : Not sure why Germans do it... However, I recall it was a fashion statement in the 90s (around 1993-94) because most of us guys back home wore 'sport'
32 Tsaord : Im American and I do not like to show my toes, Im self conscious about them. I like sandals but I still wear socks. No biggie.
33 CaptOveur : I am not mean enough to show the world my toes.. I no longer have big toenails so sandals are out of the question for me.
