Did they expect them to be a peaceful bunch of warriors. Funny, I don't remember hippies back then in my history books.

The movie was silly.

Its not supposed to be an exact re-telling of history. In fact, its account of Persian history and depiction of Xerxes was basically a lot of rubbish.

But even sillier is the Pavlovian reaction that the Iranian mullahs are having.

Frankly, the Mullahs have done worse things to the Persian culture of antiquity, a culture that believed in the teachings of Zoroaster, celebrated art, learning, music, and built Persepolis . If they wanted to celebrate millenia old Persian culture, they'd free it from the chokehold of fundamentalist Islam instead of making a big noise about a dumb movie.

This goes to show how far Iran will go to push their agenda. In the end, it's all about politics.

I thought it portrayed the two sides just fine. The Spartans were like a cult of fighters that would probably give most special forces these days a run for their money. They were amazing soldiers while the Persians were... not. Roughly 300 Spartans killed roughly 20,000 Persians. My guess is the Iranians are just all pissy because they got their asses handed to them and are afraid to admit it. And calling them evil in this movie is completely justified. They were on a conquest to take over the world and that made them the bad guy in this movie. If they dont like it, they can make a movie emphasizing them killing the 300 and sacking Athens (or whatever they did). I also think the movie is quite accurate in it's portrayal of their religion. I mean every other word out of the Persians mouth was "blasphemy, heathen, non-believer, etc...". Pretty much lines up with their current ideology "our way or the highway".

They should complain to the UN and see what happens.

At this point could we just compile a list of things that do not enrage Iran.

Would be a pretty short list.

That's the part that is bogus in this movie.

The Persians during the time of Xerxes were essentially Zoroastrians, with the Ahura Mazda being their holy book. In effect, you cannot convert to Zoroastrianism. You have to be born as such. There was no component of crusading religious conversion by the Achemeneids under the reign of Xerxes. The portrayal of Xerxes as some crazy drag queen trying to convert the world to his whacko religion is pure, unadulterated rubbish. It makes for a fun movie, but its not a history lesson. Sadly, most people will see it as such.

The reality is that when Islam made its way into Persia almost 1000 years later, it converted Zoroastrians by force. Those who would not convert fled to India.

Well, tactics and an understanding of the grounds of Thermopylae had a lot to do with it. Plus, the film actually has it wrong. There was an elite group of 300 Spartans who were just part of a larger force of 3000 manned by armies from Thebes, etc., etc.

Plus, if the Persians were lousy soldiers, the greater Persian empire wouldn't have ruled all of Central Asia, the MidEast, Anatolia and parts of Greece.

Well, they got that part right.

True, and I didn't actually intend to imply that they were trying to convert anyone. Just that everyone else was wrong, which they emphasized pretty much everytime the Persians spoke.

I did forget to mention that in my original post. But either way, the Persian dead were still estimated in excess of 20,000. 7:1 is still something to brag about for a kill ratio.

I think that was a result of their sheer numbers. An army in the millions back then is going to be able to roll over pretty much anyone they want. And if they negotiated in real life the way they did in the movie, that would go a long way in explaining how they were able to take over so much of Asia.

Zoroastrians were the ones who originally prayed five times a day which was later assimilated by Mohammod. It seems very pious to some and he knew that.
