according to TVNewser and later confirmed by NBC News, NBC Nightly News Weekend Anchor John Seigenthaler is out at NBC News:

Quote:
First on TVNewser: John Seigenthaler's departure from NBC News, announced on the air Sunday, is related to divison-wide budget cutbacks.

"He told staff just today that his contract was not renewed. Apparently he's known for 'months,'" a tipster says.

There is speculation who will be replacing him. according to the same site, it is believed it will be either Weekend Today anchor Lester Holt or Campbell Brown.

I would have to say with NBC News cutbacks and reorganization bringing MSNBC to 30 Rock, it doesn't suprise me.

I would say they will look at the 3 following people to anchor:

* Lester Holt
* Campbell Brown
* David Gregory

They don't really want just a sole WNN anchor, someone who has other responsibilites, which all three of them do. Lester and Campbell are both anchors at Weekend Today and David Gregory is NBC Chief White House Correspondent. An announcement is expected soon.

John Seigenthaler was kinda an oddball as he did not do any double duty like the others. Though the times he did fill in on the Today Show you could see it was not for him, very stiff.

Lester Holt

I like him a lot, would seem to be a more seamless replacement

Campbell Brown

 no  I just don't like the idea of seeing a weekend evening news chick. Ann Curry, MAYBE, but not Campbell.

David Gregory

Eh, whatever. I think of him more as an in the field guy.

I was shocked that JS was leaving. He's been a staple there for 11 years and it's kind of shocking there was no warning. Apparently he's going to be spending some long overdue weekend time with his family, so best wihes to him.

i'd be surprised if Holt or Brown jumped on it. they'd both be good, don't get me wrong, but they've got a sweet gig at Weekend Today that i would be surprised to see them leave.

interesting comment that there were complaints that Seigenthaler's primary duty was to anchor the weekend news ... that's what a weekend anchor does. that *IS* their primary duty. the investigation shows & reports he works on can not just pop out of thin air and need time to develop and work on. i think there's more to it than between the parties but it seems to remain amicable.

i doubt he'll remain unemployed soon. he's very very well networked and got friends all around the industry.

I think if either took it, they woudn't leave WT. If either do get it, I would suspect the one who didn't get it would be first in line as a sub.

The only thing that worries me about if one of them takes it and doesn't leave WT is that people might feel wierd about seeing them both in the morning and night.

Although, I think NBC will do fine if they go with one of the 3. Both Weekend Today and Weekend Nightly News are top rated beating ABC/CBS in both times.

they'd have to leave Weekend Today.

the hours would kill them.

and it would be just weird to see your morning anchor going from Jimmy Buffett concerts in the plaza to talking about stuff blowing up in the middle east that evening. it just wouldn't work.

The NBC network is part of General Electric. I am quite sure that the bean counters and severely overpaid executives at GE's headquarters have told the NBC News division to cut back on spending especially as to on air talent as is probably a net money loser vs. entertainment programing divisions. Years ago before CNN, Fox News, MSNBC and expanded local news, the ABC/CBS/NBC network news was the only real TV news sources and could make money on them while today they can't.

Seigenthaler wasn't an $8-million a year anchor. he was undoubtedly pulling in a seven figure year figure, probably something along the range that you'd find in larger markets for their anchors, but that number is still a drop in the bucket for the news department.

it was probably something along the lines of this scenario -- they would pay him the same but they wanted him to commit to a regular schedule working two or three days during the week doing national correspondence work and doing his weekend gig for the same amount of pay. he said no thanks and they said no thanks.

it happened not so long ago in the Saint Louis market ... when it came time to talk the contract of 26-year veteran of KSDK television anchor and $600,000 + a year anchor Karen Foss ... they wanted her to work on Fridays (she was doing the 5pm & 10pm news Monday - Thursday) and raise her salary to $625,000 + a year or take a pay cut making $125,000 per year based on the number of days she worked during the week ... essentially reducing her pay to $500,000.

she got up from the table, walked away into the newsroom and announced her resignation two weeks from that day.
