I wish I could have made the race this year, but coming from the east coast it wasn't going to happen. I really wanted to see how the American Le Mans Series tackled the Long Beach circuit, and see my first Champ Car race to boot. Plus all of the other stuff... Toyota pro/celebrity race, Speed World Challenge GT, some drifting, etc

there did used to be f1 there in 70s and 80s !!
1976-1983 to be exact... It's been Champ Car/CART ever since.

Indy car and Champ used to be one and the same, then a big fight occurred namely over the sport becoming primarily non American teams and cost of various technologies eliminating most teams from being able to complete so they split.
Champ is no longer CART. But whatever your take on the race itself, the whole event is one big party for three days and about a week for those of us who operate the thing. The race itself is just a minor part of the whole show, but personally the drifting competition is a blast.
Side note, never ever party with Team Aussie. You guys from down under are way too crazy for even a drunk Irishman such as myself. After closing down the bars we ended back up at the hotel where I found a full bottle of Aussie rum being quickly drained directly into me. That year I had to drive back to SD in the morning, thanks guys.
