Pakistan has clearly kept up its side of the bargain and done its best to appease India's fears by arresting many Islamic militants - lets hope India is now willing to back down and the situation be resolved. Here's to World Peace in 2002.  Smile

I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

Arresting sundry militants is just an eyewash. Even the Taliban did that. Indian press views the current arrest-question-and-release spree by Pakistani police as a joke. Actions like shifting the HQs of terrorist organizations from Pakistan to 'Kashmir' (i.e. the part of Kashmir occupied by them) are merely cosmetic and serves no purpose than to claim that they are doing something (http://www.nytimes.com/2002/01/02/international/02CND-INDI.html).

India has already handed a list of 20 (or was it 30) people wanted for past terrorist attacks, along with evidence on their culpability, and has demanded their *extradition*. A number of those in the list have Interpol Red Corner notices in their name, so evidence or the lack of it is not an issue.

However Pakistan's (rather, Musharraf's) response two days ago to this is that they will NOT extradite anyone, but will be tried under their law. This is ridiculous. Those terrorists are wanted for crimes committed in India, not Pakistan.

Didn't the Taliban offer to try Bin Laden under their Islamic law if they were given PROOF ? Exactly what did George Bush do then ? Provide the proof and sit twiddling his thumbs waiting for the 'law' to take its own course ? No. He justifiably saw that the gesture was a hollow one, shared proof with _his_ allies and took what action he deemed fit. This is precisely what India has done. We shared the proof with US, EU and other nations, placed punitive restrictions on Pakistan, and at the same time mounted a diplomatic offensive to force Pakistan to act on the extradition requests (http://www.indian-express.com/ie20020101/top2.html), while at the same time manning its own borders.

A first strike by India is ruled out at this moment. We have *nothing* to gain from it at this juncture, except widespread condemnation. On the other hand, a punitive first strike is the only way Pakistan can hope to have any sort of success in a military action between the two nations. History has shown Pakistan to be the aggressor in each and every skirmish in the past, never mind the fact that they lost each time. So its not hard to guess who's position is offensive and who's is defensive.

Despite our disagreements Barfbag, I agree with you on this one.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

For once I also agree with BarfBag on this. How is Pakistan going to deal the terroists under their own law?Make them stand in the corner facing the wall with a dunce hat on their heads?
