Anyone Have Any 4/20 Stories?

Given tomorrow's date, I figured someone ought to start this thread. For those of you who don't know, 4/20 is basically the annual stoner's holiday. It traces back to a group of high schoolers up in San Rafael who met up to smoke at 4:20 every day after school. While I would never encourage illicit activity ( Big grin), does anyone have any stories about previous or intended 4/20 incidents?

So the fog I see in pics of the Golden Gate Bridge isn't a naturally occurring weather phenomenon?

Well, here is my video and pictures from last year's 4/20 gathering here at the University of Colorado @ Boulder, arguably the 4/20 capital of the USA...

The background for the video is that up until a few years ago, 4/20 was simply allowed to happen here...the cops had no problems with it and just stood back and watched while thousands of people puffed away on Farrand Field on campus...then, a few years ago, CU's reputation started going down the toilet owing to the football and Ward Churchill scandals, plus the #1 party school ranking my freshman year of 2003-04, so admin decided that as part of their image of cleaning up, CU needed to get rid of 4/20...easier said than done!!! 2 years ago, the CU police's plan to stop 4/20 was to simply turn on the sprinklers on the field...an ill-thought out plan which was quickly quashed by the pot-happy mob when people started bringing out trash cans from the dorms which surround Farrand Field, placing them over the sprinkler heads and sitting on them...end result:

4/20 revelers 1, CU Police 0

Now, last year, having been embarrassed heavily by the failed sprinkler plan, the CU Police came back with a vengeance...they made it known well in advance that Farrand Field was to be closed on 4/20, and to go on it at all that afternoon would be a trespassing violation...in addition, they hired about 50 rent-a-cops as well as placing temporary barricades across the open end of the field...the video below takes place around 4 pm on the afternoon of 4/20/06, when one brave soul stepped up to the plate and started smashing in the barricades...I had brought my video camera and picked what turned out to be the perfect spot to watch...

...4/20 lived on as normal last year, except for one final sadistic twist by the CU PD...during the revelry, CU PD had hired people to go undercover and take pictures of people smoking on the field...after the festivities were over, the pictures were posted on the CU PD website, and they were offering a $50 reward for identification of anyone shown in the pictures (there were about 200 pictures posted, IIRC)...what happened then was a bunch of things...campus-wide outrage over this sneaky move by the cops, and a mistrust that could clearly be felt all over campus in the days that followed the picture postings...and eventually there were some lawsuits over the whole thing filed by students pictured, saying that the closure of the field was unconstitutional or something like that (what happened was that people who were pictured were not charged with anything drug related, since a picture apparently cant prove what exactly one was smoking, but rather people were charged with trespassing...some people then took the opinion that CU had no right to close the field like that and found lawyers who agreed, and they sued the school/police...Im not sure what the results of the lawsuits were, to be honest)

Here are some stills I took last year from 4/20 as well...

Now, 4/20 this year should be pretty interesting for one significant reason: Farrand Field is legitimately closed this year for renovations...a year long project which started last summer and is supposed to go through this summer (interestingly, the project also includes improved fencing around the field which will make it hard for 4/20 to return there)...so then, whats the plan? Word has gotten through to the student body through word of mouth and Facebook that 4/20 is being moved to Norlin Quad, which is much bigger than Farrand Field (at least twice the size) and also has the advantage of being fairly hard to shutdown, owing both to its lack of fencing and the fact that it is surrounded by classroom buildings for the most part, and so the paths that cut through the quad need to be left open...here it is on Google Maps, to get an idea:

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&z=17...803&spn=0.007306,0.009592&t=h&om=1

Farrand Field (the old site) is the field south of the football stadium that has the large dirt areas at the NW and SE corners...the buildings around the area are predominantly dorms...

Norlin Quad is the huge expanse west of the football stadium that has paths criss-crossing it...buildings around Norlin Quad include mostly classroom buildings, plus the main library which is the building at the east end...

So far, the CU Police have been very quiet again about what they plan to do to counter it...now that the photo trick has been used (I suspect that was a one-and-done tactic, given the outrage that followed; more hassle than it was worth to the cops), Im intrigued to see what they will come up with tomorrow...we'll see! I'll be back with a report after I return from it...

Ok., here's some pics from 4/20/2007...police presence was fairly minimal, only a few uniformed cops roaming around, no rent-a-cops...they issued 6 tickets...seemingly very random but that was the extent of police action...also, interestingly, I tried to enter a building bordering the quad to get a better view but was kicked out immediately by a cop who claimed the building was closed...at the same time I tried to enter, a professor whose office was in that building tried to enter as well and the cop wouldnt let him in either!

The crowd was fairly large, definitely larger than last year, and as always, it was a fun time...

There you go. Choosing your college based on a single day's event where people gather to smoke it up. Good luck in school, that's all I can say. Or rather, hopefully you'll learn a little more before that time comes.

Actually, I have visited CU at least 4 times. I love it's location, close to the mountains. I plan on getting a caddie scholarship, and that limits my choice of colleges. CU is one of the few that sponsors this scholarship. I have more reasoning than what was pictured.... Way to go.

Jesus Christ, why do people always manage to get away with this crap. It is about fricking time that the police show up and do something about this BS. I bet you that they did not have all their force working that day. I know they have to take care of other stuff, but for god sakes why can they not make sure that no one gets an off day on this day. This crap has gone on for to long, it is about time that they fine/throw in jail for a night anyone caught with any marijuana on them. Our society is starting to consider it "OK" for people to go and get high. Well here is something for you I know of 2 guys who are commercial pilots who get high and treat it as the drinking rule (48 hours for excessive). Because our society is now OK with these morons smoking marijuana alot of professional jobs now have these low lifes who do drugs working at these professional jobs. I can not f*cking stand it. I live in the worst affected area (British Colombia) and am ASHAMED that nothing is done.
End Rant
Sorry guys I had to get that off my chest.

Lighten up! You are not obliged to participate.

I don't partake in the tradition, but I see no problem with it to be honest. Whats even more irrational is overcrowding the judicial system with people for minor drug offenses.

At MSP in December 2004, I took off from runway 4 in a DC9-30. We used only about 3500 feet before we were airborne. A week later, I landed on runway 22 in a snow storm in another DC9-30.

I have lots of 4/22 stories. I took off from LGA's runway 4 going to ORD. We barely split the gap between the arrivals on 31 - great job by the controllers! And when I flew into LGA, also from ORD, we were cleared for a visual to 22 when we were at about 125th St. over the Hudson River.  biggrin
