Bollards

I was wondering WTF are those? Steel spikes that come up from out of the street to block traffic. I wouldn't call this funny so much as sad that people think they are above the system. I guess there is some joy to be had in watching them get their comeuppance.

They are the bollards in the centre of Manchester, designed to let the Metroshuttle busses through and nothing else. They're very controversial, and at least half a dozen cars have come to a sticky end. However, these are are trying to illegally use bus-only zones and apparently can't read 3m high signs, an electronic voice warning them not to risk it and giant LED no entry signs.

I feel, it is unsafe especially for a noob in that area who happened to be following a bus thinking that it is a real way.
They should use some thing like this so that the driver can actually see the thing.

They are very clearly marked out with signs before hand. If you can't pay attention to the road and signs, well, you deserve it. I wish they would start installing some of those around here.

They don't deserve a broken spine for a fine/ticket. I'm assuming people who do this by mistake and not on purpose.

I work for safety of equipment and we have to assume that people are dumb and don't get killed for being dumb.

They don't do it by mistake, they do on purpose, that is why they are there in the first place. They don't deserve a broken spine and they don't get a broken spine. Your car gets damaged, your head might hit the windshield because you're an idiot and not wearing your seatbelt, or you may suffer some life altering trauma because you "could have been killed" and try to make out a big campaign against these when in reality it was your own ignorance that is to blame.

Doesn't look like it to me - most are both tailgating the bus, and are obviously approaching at some speed judging by the footage and the impacts.

I was wondering the same a few months ago when I first saw the video. If they tried that in the U.S.A. the city that used them would go broke from lawsuits. I am all for punishing wrong doing but those things just look dangerous.

What happens to any unrestrained passengers or kids or god forbid babies in the same car. I kind of agree with you but I think those things just go too far. A better idea would be tire spikes. The driver would learn his lesson without the sudden impact.

I can understand that point, but again, it's time that driver's (and other people) learn to be responsible for their actions. There should not be any unrestrained occupants in a vehicle, especially babies. Of course, in the real world, we know that this (unfortunately) happens on a daily basis. The driver is responsible for this, no one else. If, in a situation like this, as cold as this may sound, but the driver has demonstrated two acts of ignorance, one being that they didn't make sure all occupants (or just didn't care) of the vehicle were belted, and two, trying to deliberately drive somewhere they weren't supposed to, despite being warned in the first place.

Quoting Airfoilsguy (Reply 12):

I can agree with you to a point, but the tire spikes would have to be up all the time to prevent traffic from going through, possibly creating a hazard for pedestrians.

Quoting Airfoilsguy (Reply 12):

And this is what bothers me. The driver is 100% at fault, plain and simple, but people try to point the finger at someone else for making a situation "dangerous" avoiding the fact that if they had paid attention, they wouldn't be where they are in the first place.

"Manchester City Council introduced a traffic calming scheme in the City centre several months back which allows only buses, emergency & services vehicles through at certain times of the day, despite the fact that large illuminated warning signs are visible for all to see it doesn't stop people trying to beat the system, a good way to try out your airbags !It's claiming on average three vehicles per week........... Proof that the damages to vehicle and occupants is sole responsibility of the drivers stupidity. Moral of the story? Learn to drive, pay attention to the road, traffic and signs and you won't have to worry about that happening to you.

Some of the cars were deliberate attempts, but the lady with the baby, definitely a mistake, poor thing!

I guess it depends on the size of the signs and what they say, but these things do seem annoying, compared to a metal rod.

The wipers all seemed to be switched on at the time of impact, probably something to do with the flailing of arms at the time. I can't help but laugh at the passenger in the van, his head shatters the windscreen!  Big grin

Like hell. Look again. She was clearly flooring it, hoping to get past the barriers when she would slam on the brakes to avoid hitting the bus.

There's some of these in Chester too. There are big signs saying "Do Not Tailgate" before them, and a sign telling you they're there. If you're stupid enough to ignore them, you deserve to get injured by one  Silly

It is quite obvious that the SUV was going at an excessive speed and tailgating the bus.

If you watch it again, you can clearly see the SUV quickly start to accelerate once the bus has gone through. They obviously knew that the bollards were there and would raise if they didn't step on it. This with a baby in the vehicle, not smart.
