Food Poisoning Sucks! Any Help?

Posted (7 years 8 months 3 days 7 hours ago) and read 2015 times:

Hi guys.

So this past Saturday, i turned the big 1-8 and was really excited to go out and do something. Everything was fine until i decided to eat TUNA at school. Yes, I guess some might label me as stupid, but i had never had a problem with it.

As the day progresses, i feel my head hurting a bit...then more...then a bit more...until i have a full-blown headache...

I have nausea.

I have a headache.

I feel as if though I'm crapping water (sorry, too graphic? Big grin )

Give it a couple of more hours and I'm throwing up...

Saturday comes along and i still do feel like shit. yet, i manage to take a TUMS and coat my stomach (at least thats what i was told) and get pretty wasted on my way to West Hollywood. Truth of the matter is, i felt perfectly fine. i dont know if its because i was too numb to feel anything or maybe it had temporarily gone away. who knows.

Danced. Laughed. Partied. Usual =)

Now I find myself, four days later, with no nausea, just diarrhea (sexy huh?). I have a bit of a headache but it is significantly less painful than before. I HAVE gotten food poisoning before, but it has never lasted this long. I've lost some color to my face (yellowish?) and my stomach seems to yell at me when i PUT food into it.

Currently, I'm taking ampicilin, which has done nothing really, and just been drinking fluids. Is it normal to have food poisoning for this long? How can i deal with it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Drink lots of fluids with electrolytes e.g. gatorade, and avoid any products until your stomach has cleared up. Eat dry biscuits like digestives or graham crackers, or dry toast. Take it easy and no more partying !!

You may already be over the technical "food poisoning" and now the ampicillin is giving you diarrhea by killing off your beneficial gut bacteria.
Eat as much yogurt as you can stand to replenish the good gut bacteria, especially the kinds marked "active culture".

I hope you feel better very soon.  Smile

Why would you take antibiotics if you don't have an infection. It doesn't seem clear that a doctor prescribed them to you.

Heed his advice. Drink what you can and eat whatever bland food you can stomach... nothing dairy though. Imodium A-D or Advanced works wonders when you have the trots. And it helps settle your stomach some. At least you can spend less time on the loo and you run less risk of dehydration.

And you may not have food poisoning, it could be a stomach/intestinal virus. I had one right before Christmas and was down for the count for 2-3 days where I couldn't eat much of anything. And it took another 5 days before I got my appetite back. Wasn't fun at all.

I got food poisoned by KFC last year (they did give me some vouchers as an apology).
Best thing I can think of, is do nothing, but rest, drink plenty of fluids (i.e water and lucozade) and avoid dairy products.
Get well soon.

I have only had food poisoning once from what I remember, that was about a year ago when I ate a pizza from Pizza Hut (it was revolting - never again  vomit

I felt like crap for a week so you could have a few days ahead of you yet.

YEP!

Antobiotics are well known to have that as a side effect. The last time I was given antis (horse pills almost) for an infection, I ate yogurt like no tomorrow. My stomach did not have any bad reactions.

Am I the only one remotely worried by this?

A yellowish colour usually implies that something is VERY wrong in your body- liver, galdbladder, or something else.

I'd seek medical attention, right away. It doesn't seem right.  Sad

Btw, when you're prescribed ampicillin, you have to take all the pills in the packet before the cure is considered done- if you don't finish the packet, the infection is likely to come back- I think that's why threadstarter is still taking the pills.

This sounds like the Norovirus infection I had back in January. Not fun at all. It did last a week... the only thing you can try to do is get some of those over-the-counter medicines that build your "good gut bacteria" back up, and eat yogurt.

Oh, and clarify with whoever prescribed you antibiotics if you really need to continue that cure.

Good luck

Go and see a doctor. I had a bout of gastro last year, similar to food poisoning, doctor told me to have ice blocks (flavored frozen water on a stick) and to drink some stuff called gastrolyte which is full of electrolytes. Also try ginger, or a motion sickness medication which contains ginger, this will help settle your stomoch. While the others will help stop your diarrhea

I feel for you!Had my first case of it around this time last year when myself and my wife decided to eat some prawns (shrimps). In less than about 2 hours I started to feel bad as you described (headache, light nausea), then BOOM, spent the entire night vomitting and severe diaharrea. Hit my wife a few hours later. I had never been so week in all my life. Had to get a neighbour to take our son for the day as we ended up in bed the entire following day. Doctor came to us, gave me a prescription, I got up the energy to drive to the chamist which is only a 3 minute drive away, got out the gate, and realised I was too weak, so luckily another neighbour was outside his house and he went off to get our script filled for us.

Drink lots of water so as to avoid dehydration. I think within about 48 hours the whole thing had passed, but wow, I have never been so sick or felt so weak in all my life. Obviously, to this day, I still just can't face even touching a prawn let alone eating one, and I used to love them!!

Good luck!

Hey guys

Thanks all for your replies. I'm still stuck with the runs and stuff, but i have more color to my face...not completely lookin like it used to but its still an improvement...

only thing now is that i feel I'm beginning to develop a sore throat. is that anything to do with food poisoning perhaps?

As far as the ampicilin, i guess one can say i self-remedied myself. i have had food poisoning before and with like two or three of the pills, i was good to go.

Normally, whenever i would have ate something, my stomach would just GROWL at me, even if it was the lightest yogurt possible. now, it tends to have died down a bit. I'm not sure if i still have diarrhea since i have not had a bowel movement today.

I have been sleeping a lot, I'm not going to lie. i would just walk around the house and then get tired and sleep. but overall i guess one can say I'm getting better...just wondering whats up with the sore throat.

THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP GUYS!!!

I just had a very bad case of food poisoning, which had to be treated in the ER. My entire stomach was infected. So if the symptoms persist, you throw up 'clearly' (i.e. like water), be careful! It could be damn serious!

You sound like you've got the stomach flu or gastroenteritis. I had it once in grade 2 and once in december. It sucks and I would have rather died. The worst part is you need to crap every 15 minutes and you have to throw up 5 seconds later. Double bucket sickness.

Good luck, its usually bad the first day or two. Don't eat anything, just drink to stay hydrated (for 5 minutes LOL).

The most important thing, as mentioned above, is to keep hydrated. Back in February I got food poisoning from some bad salsa and was doing everything you've mentioned... I snacked on the stuff from about 4:00-8:00 PM, started feeling headachy around 10:00 PM and then was on the bathroom floor by 2:00 AM. By 10:30 AM the next day it was all going south but I was having trouble drinking fluids without stomach cramps. By 8:00 PM that evening I was in the hospital for IV fluids. Argh.

Best wishes for you to get better.

Up, up and away!
