I was wondering if anyone out there has spent some time in Kona, or on the Big Island of Hawaii in general? If so, what did you enjoy about it? Anything in particular to recommend? I am looking for a good tour into the volcanoes along with a scuba/snorkel tour out in the ocean. I have seen many different companies, but am just looking for personal experience. Also, which resort did you stay at while there?

So far my only bookings are a stay at the Royal Kona Resort and a dinner cruise on Red Sail Sports.

First of all order this book (it's like $10 new, cheaper used), look through it before you go, and then when you get to the Big Island, take it everywhere you go:

Seriously, it's like having a local with you on your trip. It is really a great book, and it shows you places you probably wouldn't find on your own.

The big island is really amazing. Hope you have lots of fun there!!!!

Hey, I went to Kona last summer. Of course, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will be the highlight of the visit. You will be able to spend a whole day there. Despite what some of the locals say, the drive from Kona to the park is NOT as long as they say, that is, if you aren't afraid of passing slow-pokes.

Don't expect to see lava. And when they say it is a tough, long hike over the lava-rocks to the spot to see the lava go in the ocean clearly, BELIEVE THEM!. The walk is at least 4 miles long round-trip, and in the heat of the day, it is a pain in the A**. Also, when coming back at night, you will NOT make it back unless each person in your party has a flashlight, it is pitch-black when going over those rocks. Also, bring a wind-breaker/jacket. We went in August and it was pretty chilly up there.

What we did, was we drove around the entire island for our 3 day visit. We made it back with time to spare, it was definitely a nice experience. In Kona we stayed at the Outrigger. It's an excellent hotel right on the beach within walking distance to a great snorkeling spot. The hotel rooms are standard but the location is prime. Not the resort-like hotel at all though.

There are a few but pretty good beaches on the Kona side, you'll just have to spot those by eye like we did.

If you venture over to the other side of the island, don't expect anything great. Hilo is pretty boring and it's always rainy. Akaka falls is alright, but nothing spectacular.

Have fun, and remember what I said about the volcanoes national park!

I was there in 2003 and stayed at the King Kamehameaha(?sp?) Hotel. I think there is some decent golf courses there. My family and I walked around alot and found some cool gift shops, etc. When I was in Hilo I took a tour of the volcanoes, so I can't help you there that much. My dad knows some good places, but I can't contact him but when I can I'll post some good spots he knows.

P.S. Make sure you do some spotting, it's a cute, unique airport!

Thanks! I read several reviews great reviews on it, so I just bought it for a wallet busting $3.75.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

How did you get there? Did you take a rental car, a guided tour, or something else? There is a tour I am looking at that will pick me up at my hotel and says it will be about 9-10 hours long.

I saw one photo on "the other site" and it looks to be an interesting little one. A.net doesn't have any of the airport itself I believe. From what I understand, no real terminal or jetway's? Pair that with flying AQ from OAK and I just might be set!

Nope, it's an outside airport with little huts for gifts, check-in, etc. It's the only time when I stood outside next to a 744. I think I have a picture, but I'm not sure.

BTW, you have the apostraphe in the wrong spot on "jetway's"  Wink

We took a rental car, and that's what I highly recommend. With a rental car, you are on your own time. There are many, many activities to do at the park, and you shouldn't feel rushed. Also, you would likely drive there faster than a bus.

Kona airport is neat, but there isn't much action there except at rush hour: 1-4 PM and 9-12 PM
