Anyone Else Here Who Can't Stand LOL?

Posted (7 years 3 months 1 day 19 hours ago) and read 7879 times:

I don't know why, but I cannot stand that expression. (Abbreviation, or whatever..)

Maybe it's because people claim they are Laughing out loud behind their monitors, even at things that hardly makes you crack a smile... It's simply used too often.
I don't know how others pronounce it.. but the way it sounds in my head it also strikes me as a pretty "feminine" expression. A bit like "Oh God, you tease..." in a slightly high pitched voice... (Right off the top of my head here...)  Smile
Kinda, like something you'd shout out rather than making a laughing sound...

Not even ROTFL annoys me as much as LOL... even though the thought that someone is actually rolling around on the floor, laughing in front of their computers is an even more extreme reaction. (If anyone literally does this, shouldn't they seek some kind of help?)

So, who will join me in an anti LOL campaign?  Wink

I rarely use LOL. When I think something is funny, and I don't laugh, I say "haha". But if I actually do laugh, I say "LMAO". Not LOL.

Another thing I absolutely hate is when people treat the abbreviation LOL as a word. See: "Lol. That's funny.

And then there are the people who use "LOLZ".... Oh God.. Don't get me started.

The proper term is "on final" not "on finals" bud...

The only time I use it is when I literally laugh out loud. I was talking to one of my school buddies on AIM the other day and every other sentence there was an LOL in it. Yes, I can't stand it when it's used excessively and for no reason. But when it's used the way I use it, all is well.

I use it more as a chuckle.

lol = chuckle
LOL = somewhat funny
ROFL = really laughing
OTF = laughing so hard I had to leave the room

A couple of friends have used it in conversation, but really dragging it out when someone has a *facepalm* moment, such as "Ellllllll Ohhhhh Ellllllll".

In Dutch, the word lol literally means laugh, fun. Lol hebben or lol maken means having fun or having a laugh. So Thom@s if you were Dutch, you might find it slightly less objectionable.

I'm pretty sure he means something along the lines of replacing the word "laugh" with "tee-hee".

Lame? Yes.

I constantly use it, but it is only in a purely sarcastic sense... I have a couple friends that I instant message with in nothing but mock "leet speak", which is something like- "OMFG WTF IM TALK1NG N T3H L33T SP33K FTW LOL TTYLZ CHA1RMAN LMAO!!1!!!1". As annoying as it is, I get a kick out of it so we do it constantly.
