"WASHINGTON (AP) - An odd-looking Canadian quarter with a bright red flower was the culprit behind a false espionage warning from the U.S. Defense Department about mysterious coins with radio frequency transmitters, The Associated Press has learned."

The Royal Canadian Mint has been producing commemorative coins for years. They are on the cutting edge of coin technology, but RFID's in quarters I don't think so.

One of posters on the Globe's discussion forum was reminded of Colonel Flagg from MASH. I thought that was really apt!

It was nice to see a close-up view of the quarter. It really is a beautiful coin. Too bad it was only distributed through Tim Horton's!

They just happened to be the distribution point, once given out as change they quickly circulate throughout the monetory system. The RCM are using different banks for each of the Olympic Special quarters.
