Hi all

I've got a problem... at any time, I would suddenly have a very severe pain in the chest that lasts for only a second or two. I've just heard from my friend that he has this problem as well and it's an inherited heart disease, but he didn't seem to be willing to tell me what it's all about. He just tells me that it's a dangerous one.

Is there anybody who can help me out here? I've had this problem for a few years but I kept ignoring it. I'm so freaked out... HELP!  Crying

Thanks in advance

See a doctor...See a doctor...See a doctor....

Also keep in mind that chest pains can also be indicative of digestive system problems....ulcers, acid reflux, and hiatal hernia.

Do you feel the pain in your left arm also? If so, go see a doctor immediately.

AS said above SEE A DOCTOR, on the way make a list of the answers to these questions. 1) Where is the pain, 2) how severe is the pain rate it from 1 to 10 with 10 being the most severe, 3) does thepain go anywhere like your jaw, left arm (good point LMML 14/32), your back, 4) does the pain happen upon exercise, 5) does the pain occur when you inhale, 5) is there any history of cardic problems in your family.

But IMPORTANT !!!, SEE a DOCTOR NOW or go to the nearest ER NOW

Please update us as to your status

1. See a doctor.

2. See a doctor.

3. See a doc....(you can see where we're going with this)

Makes sense. Get it checked out now, spare yourself some worry.

Pains from heart problems feel like squeezing crushing pain.

EGGD, are you talking about that sharp intense stabbing pain when you inhale? The more you inhale, the sharper the pain? You have take real shallow breathes until in goes away? Is that it? If so, I get all the time. It's common and nothing of concern.

BTW, the above applies to emergency heart crisis like angina. Heart attacks can be vague and feel like heartburn. That's what happened to my father-in-law. He had 'heartburn' a good portion of the day. It got real bad that night, so he went in and they told him he was having a heart-attack from blocked arteries!! Quadruple bypass was done and he is fine now.

I do not think you need to go to the ER unless it is causes you problems, I think that is a bit overkill. I would however call up your doctor and book an appointment in thenext couple of days.

When I was a child I caught a fever, my hands felt like two balloons.....No wait, that's a song.

Seriously though. When I was a child I had a condition that my doctor described as being a type of arthritis of the rib cage. I had sudden stabbing pains out of nowhere sometimes. I learned that if i took a sharp breath, the pain would go away. It lasted from about 8 years old to 17. Does this sound similar?

Regardless, get thine ass to a doctor right away. That would be now, this minute.

Damn, this website is getting worse daily.

I used to have that happen and it would trigger panic attacks. Thankfully I have it under control now.

I get this quite often as well. It's mostly when you inhale though. Sometimes it can get really painful. Best way to describe it is "sharp." Sometimes I have to breath real slow and hold my breath for a while, and still it won't go away at times and lasts a while. Dunno what the heck it is, my mom told me when I was younger that it was normal. I don't think it's anything to worry about, unless it has been really severe and you've passed out or something.

take care,

Hi all,

Thanks for all your advice. I think I'll go to the doctor myself because I really don't want my parents to know about it... (or they're gonna nag me 24/7.)

Sometimes the pain comes when I inhale deeply, as some of you have mentioned, but at other times it just comes for no reason. I was sitting there, doing some writing work, and I felt a stabbing pain in my chest for a split second. I did have some problem with the lungs and was in hospital for a week or so when I was 2.

And no... I didn't pass out. But I doubt that this is normal - none of my friends at school have this.

D-AIGW, a doctor will ask you other symptoms (lightheadedness, pallor, sweats, weakness, shortness of breathe, lethergy, numbness, etc). If you have no other symptoms, I gaurantee s/he will dismiss it VERY quickly.

Calm down, it's probably nothing.

It's something we call in French "douleurs intercostales" that means "inter-xxx pain". You've got it because you're growing up. I even have it from time to time, even if I'm not growing up anymore.
It's the nerves that are between the bones of your chest.

Relax and go see a doctor if you want. But the guy who told you it was serious was joking (probably).

It might just be a case of light angina. Try this, drink water with every meal, and NO sweets for a week and it will be healthier on your blood. Just give it a shot man.

Only your doctor can rule out more serious problems.

I used to have horrible chest pains when I was a teenager, from panic attacks. However my blood pressure and pulse were always normal. I just needed to relax. BUT, later, when I was in college, I was diagnosed with a heart murmur, from the mitral valve. I never had any pain or shortness of breath from that.

So it comes down to having your doctor check you out, thoroughly. You may or may not need an electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG) and chest x-ray -- your doctor can often tell a lot by simply listening to your heart with a stethoscope. S/he may also order blood tests to check for certain enzyme levels, but that's usually only if s/he suspects actual heart damage.

I hope you're feeling better soon.
