Today at 11:00am, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is holding a press conference. Rumors have it he is leaving DEI at the end of this season to form his own team. Apparently, the talks between him and Teresa, (his step-mom) haven't gone in the direction he wants, and that is controlling int erst in DEI. Should be an interesting press conference.

Quoting TedTAce (Reply 1): If this is true Teresa has screwed herself 7 ways to Sunday. The money and the talent is going to follow Jr. and all she will have is the old name.
Better believe it.
No one gives two craps about Theresa Earnhardt . . . the NAME and the are all Dale Earnhardt, Jr. He is - afterall - the MOST popular, MOST liked driver in NASCAR.
She's gotta be a greedy bitch or just plain stupid (perhaps both??) to let him walk.
Dale Jr. will take the fan base, the sponsors (Bud will bail on Theresa, contract no withstanding) and the crews. DEI ink will be a ghost town if Jr. leaves.

I'm wondering if that isn't really what she's after. Take her share and get completely out of the business. And try to put all the blame on Jr. for being greedy, rather than giving in and simply giving him the 51% he's seeking.
Press conference is on Speed Channel, as well as all the ESPN networks.
DEI's done. They'll definitely lose Budweiser, probably the #8, as well as all of Jr's other sponsors. There's no way in hell they'll be able to hire a driver with near the popularity of Jr.
Rumors are a new Cup team with JR Motorsports, powered by....Hendrick engines.

He'll go where he can have a winning car every week - Hendrick Motorsports.
Rick Hendrick has given all his drivers consistent winning rides.
Jr. will go where he can win championships. DEI can keep the #8, RCR will sell
the rights for Dale Sr #3 to Hendrick and you'll see Jr. riding in that car next season.
With the Nascar rule of four car teams, look for Hendrick to get rid of Casey Mears if Jr. can negotiate something with Hendrick Motorsports.

But for some reason, the 25 car has never been solid. And when it does run well, it's luck sucks (Nadeau leading at Atlanta on the last lap in 2001 & running out of gas, Mears' bad luck when he runs well this year). They've improved in recent years, but they've still had their struggles. If Jr drove for HMS, that would more than likely be the car he drove; Jeff & JJ aren't leaving & I doubt Rick would get rid of Kyle Busch, unfortunately.
And for the old school fans, they could possibly see the #25 Bud car again.
Speed Channel ended their conference broadcast with a rumor about the JGR #18 & changes possibly coming should JJ Yeley not step up.
He hinted in the press conference that DEI would probably want to keep the #8, and that he would also probably go along with that.
Quoting TedTAce (Reply 8): "In a statement, Teresa Earnhardt said DEI will thrive following Junior’s announcement."
Thrive?? No way. But I do believe there are drivers out there that would love a chance to work for DEI, and I'm sure Teresa will sign one of them.... how they do in an organization that is sure to be in confusion remains to be seen. Junior may be leaving, but DEI won't fold just yet.
I don't think anyone is saying DEI is closing tomorrow, next year, or maybe even the year after that. But it's a very difficult thing to sell strategically.
Quoting FXramper (Reply 10): Well, I've never been a superstitious person, so your on your own there Ted.
Well it has nothing to do with Jr. following literally in his father's footsteps. While that would be the epitome of tragedy, I'm not going to forcast it. What bothers me is that while it's inarguable that the # is his birthright, I'm not convinced the Sr. fans will go for it. Maybe I'm wrong and it 'has been long enough' but to me the #3 shold never be on the track again in competition.

Simple answer... Yes... As will Budweiser.
I had forgot RCR wants to sell.
This will be a puzzle for Rick Hendrick... He already has (4) teams. And that stupid NASCAR rule of only 4 drivers per-owner hurts him from signing Dale Jr.
Off the wall... RCR does not sell due to Dale Jr will come race for him and win him another NASCAR Cup.

Kinda surprisingly, I believe he is at either Childress Racing next year or Joe Gibbs Racing. Both teams can have another car put in, and both teams have drivers which will race well with Jr. if need be. JGR is a shot with the relationship that Jr. has with Stewart and Hamlin....so who knows.

Yup, it's all over at DEI. Hell, I don't even know who else is driving for DEI???
I would LOVE to see Junior sign with Gibbs . . .
Can you imagine a Stewart, Earnhardt, Hamlin matchup against Gordon, Johnson, Busch!!! LMAO! What a ride!

As stated, as fact, by ANCflyer, Jr. is the #1 rated driver by popular vote. Doubt he'd receive any backlash for wanting to race #3.
In Fact, I expect exactly the opposite. I think the Junior Fans will love him driving the #3, AND I expect the Senior fans to be all sentimental and the like and love it as well.

JGR & RCR have the advantage here. Each team only has 3 teams.
As for HMS, Rick sent Joe Nemechek to the 01 car (satellite team) when he wanted Brian Vickers to get seat time before the start of the 2004 season, putting him in the 25 the last few races of 2003. I think Nemechek's contract with HMS was up at that point, whereas Mears is signed through 2009.
This isn't unheard of; Ray Evernham killed Casey Atwood's career by sending him to a satellite team to make way for Jeremy Mayfield in 2002 & Ginn Racing did the same thing to Nemechek this year to give Mark Martin & Regan Smith a guaranteed start in the 01. You'd wonder whether or not Rick was willing to risk a war if he dumps Casey & Casey comes back after him.
Doesn't the 4 team rule start in 2010? HMS could theoretically field a 5th car until then & dump one of the teams. (I'd like to see Jr in a Hendrick car).
