My brother and I are pulling an all-nighter video marathon, and on that occassion, we have stocked up on Red Bull energy drink (the original, blue/silver one).
Now, we don't want to screw up our sleeping patterns completely, so we'll be staying up until 10 PM tonight (it's now 3:20 AM)- so we'll definitely need the caffeine!
But of course, we don't want strokes either... so does any of you know how much Red Bull we can consume without bringing ourselves in danger? Red Bull is illegal to sell in Denmark (it is however legal to go across the border to germany and bring some home- as long as you don't sell it, so we're not criminals ), so there really isn't much knowledge about it.
Of course, it depends on bodymass and whatnot, but we just need to know how much an average person can handle and stay as far away from that maximum as possible (while still staying awake... )
We're both pretty lightweight though- my brother is 175 cm tall and weighs 60 kilos, while I'm 163 centimeters tall and weigh in at 52-55 kilos.
Any red bull stories- positive as well as negative (we all know the "my friend drank 6 red bull/vodka shots and had a heart failure" one...)- would be appreciated- so far, I've had 2 cans in a span of 5 hours and I feel wide awake, on the brink of hyperactivity.

Doesn't it say on the can that you can't drink more than 2 in a day? I've never had more than one can a day..so can't really say how much is dangerous.

Oooh, thank you for the article- that was pretty interesting!
About the 2 cans a day... that'll NEVER keep me awake... I thought it was like 6 or something (not at a time, god forbid)...
As for the wings... I think I'll make it I'm typing faster than usual and making really odd posts (like this), and I'm CERTAINLY not sleepy... so the stuff is definitely doing its job! No change in pulse or anything though... so I'm guessing I'm safe.

Our EMS department has seen significant heart rate and rhythm changes in people who've drank as little as 3 cans in a day. We would typically get called for a young person experiencing a racing heart with palpitations, dizziness, fainting, and chest pain. They reveal their Red Bull intake during our examination and assessment.
Mixing it with alcohol really screws things up. The Red Bull and alcohol are antagonists and sends mixed messages to the brain.
Guess we'd better be on the safe side and stop at 2 then.
Before I knew it could be that dangerous, I drank like 3 cans in a span of 2 hours though, and though I felt a bit sick (I always do after drinking a somewhat large amount of carbonated stuff, and this didn't feel different apart from the classic red bull "kick"), I didn't feel alarmingly ill... but there's no way in h*ll I'll be pulling that stunt again now...
Thanks so much for the post, Mark... serious business...

Isn't the best way to stay awake is simply eating right and drinking water and juices? I get the whole caffeine/sugar jolt bit but for a long term solution?

Drinking during exercise can be deadly... or so I was told when I was a swimmer. A swimmer in England once drunk a can of red bull during swimming practise, and after getting out of the pool at the end of the session, she just collapsed and died.
So unless your planning any vigorous exercise tonight, you should be fine!
I found the following sentence on the net...
'People who consume the beverage in excess (more than 2-5 250 mL tins in a 24-hour period) have been known to express discomfort, such as nausea, diarrhea, stomach pains, gas, light green urine color, sleeplessness and/or fatigue when caffeine effect wears off.'

My fatigue is caused by medicine- in my case, Dolol, which is an opiate/morphine type of thing. It makes me a bit tired from time to time, and having a can of RB helps me stay on top- it's not an every day thing- more like a can a week. Besides, seeing that we can't get the drink here in Denmark and we really don't go abroad that often, we don't have red bull that often either. So not to worry- my diet and exercise levels are a-ok.
Quoting Evan767 (Reply 7): Red Bull? Pfft... Sobe energy drinks are wayyy better.

You weren't getting a major assignment/coursework in were you? I have a feeling that this Sunday-Tuesday will be involving little in the way of sleep.
Once tried a sleep version of 'centrurion' with friends - see who could make it too 100 hours, however none of us did, I don't remember exactly how far I got, but I felt wrecked. Made sure than when I did finally sleep I woke up every two or three hours, just in case I dropped off too deeply as that can in certain unfortunate circumstances lead to a coma I believe. The world record is about 11 days I think, there's a guy trying to break it at the moment.

The LD50 (dose that will kill 1/2 the people who take it) of pure caffeine is estimated at about 10 grams. A can of Red Bull contains 80 mg of caffeine. So you would have to drink about 125 Red Bulls at once to die of caffeine poisoning. (This is actually less than the number of cups of coffee that would be fatal.)

It's not the caffeine but the taurine IN COMBINATION WITH the caffeine that makes the difference...
And if you read the earlier replies, you'll see that Red Bull can pose a risk to your health if you do take in more than your body can handle (which varies from person to person). It's legal to drink alchohol too- but that can also kill you, so the "if it's dangerous..." statement doesn't really hold any water.

I tried Red Bull about 5 years ago. Nothing. I felt no rush, no chest pains, nothing. I even fell asleep 20 minutes after drinking it! So, I tried Sobe Adreneline Rush about a year later. Hello! Off I went into the wild blue yonder! I lived on the stuff for about a year. Then, I quit. I was helping a friend move from San Diego to Portland about a year and a half after I quit driking SAR. We stopped at some wide spot on I-5 for fuel and I bought and drank SAR. I started having chest pains. So, I have sworn all of it off. But, I do miss those days....
