So I am back here in the US for good and studying for Step 1 of the USMLE (meidcal licensing exam for you non-Americans) and am studying at the very nice library at the nearby university (UC Riverside) for the last week with my classmate.

I've been noticing that it seems like nobody has any concept of keeping their damn voice down when in the library. There's always a group of idiots that think they are being quiet in the library by speaking one decibel lower. Not only to mention the fact that nobody seems to silence their phones in here, and carry on with their stupid and inane conversations. I know I'm not some hardass and need pindrop silence, but if someone needs to discuss material then whisper, and for godsakes take your cellphone conversation about who got drunk last nite outside. And when you walk out of a study room, don't keep talking in full volume!

Reason I brought this up is that I never remembered it being a problem when I was in college, and I graduated only in 2004. Is it that in three years, college students lost the concept of library etiquette? Or is a lot of this due to the fact that I got used to studying in a Medical School library where it is in fact really damn quiet, and people take their cell phone conversations outside?

Is it like this now at other schools across the country?

The library may be nice, but you might want to go to a decent school where people want to learn instead of some glorified community college full of kids blabbering about the new wing and fart can on their rice rocket.

I picked this place because it's the closest university around that is not a JC or Cal State. That and it was a really good place to study for the MCAT, until I realized that back then only summer school people were around. Maybe this is what 2 years of Med School does!  Smile

At the university I worked for/attended while I was in SoCal (CSU San Marcos) colaboration in the library was encouraged anywhere but the reference areas. Of course, you were discouraged from shouting and asked to take cell calls either outside or at least in one of the lobbies but an acceptable "library voice" was a normal conversational tone -- again, though, reference was kept a bit quieter.

The librarians actually spent more time trying to enforce the food/drink policy (as long as it was in a spillproof container it was OK; not spillproof not OK. The problem was that the Starbucks in the library served absolutely nothing except bottled water that met this criteria) then sushing people.
