"Facing a potential mutiny from Islanders fans, owner Charles Wang bit the bullet and made the decision yesterday to buy out the remaining four years of captain Alexei Yashin's 10-year contract, Newsday has learned exclusively. Some might view it as the owner admitting a costly mistake, but second-year coach Ted Nolan described it as a chance for a "new beginning" that might restore the fans' faith in the franchise.
The last four seasons of the $87.5-million contract Yashin signed after the Islanders traded for him in 2001 were valued at $26.45 million. Under the NHL collective-bargaining agreement, Wang is permitted to pay two-thirds of that amount ($17.63 million) over the next eight years to buy it out. The salary-cap hit will be approximately $2.2 million per season over that time."
Hellz yeah......A new chapter in Islander Country. Bring on Smyth!!!!!!!

That 2.2 million a year hit does hurt when you consider the type of player one can get for that amount of money. That's a solid second liner or even a young top line player. But with the cap going up, the 2.2 million a year over the next 4 will probably be a wash or even less than what the cap goes up by the next four seasons.

Damn straight, but what do I do with my Yashin jersey?
This why I'll never get a player jersey unless it's an All-Star Game jersey, because in this day and age, not too many guys stay with one team their entire career (At least with an ASG jersey it has a bit of a throwback vibe to it). I used to have a Mario Lemieux until it got a bit threadbare and I had to toss it. That's the only player jersey I have ever owned.
You can always do what some Thrashers fans did with their Heatley jerseys. Put a big X through the name and number.
So can we start taking bets on how many years before they start talking about buying out the rest of Dipietro's contract?

Ouch Piercey, owning a Yashin jersey. Tough one on that.
Quoting YooYoo (Reply 2): Good, that guy is a waste of space. Question remains, will Yashin's wife still be able to play tennis with Wang's wife, or will it be uncomfortable for them. biggrin
Oh you mean Carol Alt.......Well if Mrs. Wang dosen't play then I glady will. For her age she is one hot piece of ass.

I agree that in this league 2.2 can get you a decent player. But we must also look at the other 5.5 mill that we have free now. With the cap going up this has the potential to be huge. Not only will the money be a factor but now, hopefully, many of the free agents out there will recognize the cancer is out of the locker room. Maybe it shows Captain Canada that this team is commited to winning and we want you to come. I would be curious to see how hard we go after drury as well. Give up signing Blake if we can't get him for the right price and see what happens.
On a side note. As happy as well are that Yashin is gone I just want to say that he will be missed as well. As a player I think we can all agree he sucked the big one. But as a person he was a stand up guy. I had met Yashin twice while out in the mall and by Jones Beach. Both times he took the time to talk to my friends and I for a few minutes an he never turned down a autograph even though he was busy. On another occasion he had visited a hospital where my cousin was and this was by himself. My uncle did not see any reporters or any other players. Yash actually took a day and went on his own. This I regret we are losing, but like I said before "Bring on Smyth"

eh, it was a gift.
Either way, although he was awful on the ice, and people could question why he was captain, he was a stand up guy, so kudos to that. Now let's get everyone else resigned, esp. Smyth, Hunter, Asham, and Blake.
piercey in CLE
Well I believe it all is coming to an end. Oh well, I guess we are gonna pretend.
